Alastair James Stewart OBE (born 22 June 1952) is an English journalist and newscaster who appears on ITV News. Stewart appeared on Southern Television in 1976, then joined ITN in 1980 where he spent 3 years with Channel 4 News before moving to become a key newsreader with ITV News.
He has been in this role for more than three decades, making him the longest-serving male newsreader on British television. He has worked in both the local and national news for 42 years. He is a patron of several charities, including Kids for Kids, which helps children in Darfur, disability charity Scope, and Brooke – a program for working horses and donkeys.
Early life
Stewart was born in Emsworth, Hampshire, to a Scottish father from Invergarry and an English mother. His father served as an Air Force officer.
Stewart studied in Scotland at the state school Madras College in St. Andrews, Fife, then in England at the independent school Salesian College in Farnborough, Hampshire, and at St. Augustine's Abbey School in Ramsgate, Kent. He then studied Economics and Politics at the University of Bristol and served for the National Union of Students from 1974 to 1976.
Personal life
Stewart has been married to Sally Ann Jung since 1978 and has four children. Alex Stewart, his son, was formerly a football analyst for Tifo Football, a division of The Athletic. He and his wife live on a Hampshire farm.
Stewart was barred from driving for 23 months and fined £3,000, but he was arrested, charged, and found guilty of drink driving after smashing his car into a hedge and a telegraph pole three times over the drink driving limit in June 2003. Since he promised to enroll in a rehabilitation program for disqualified drivers, he had his original 30-month ban suspended.
Stewart is a strong promoter of a variety of charities, including Kids for Kids, which supports villages in Darfur, and Naomi House & Jacksplace, pediatric and young adults, near Winchester. He is also an Ambassador for Action for Children and a Patron for Brooke, as well as a Worker Horse and Donkey.

Career
Stewart's television career began in 1976 with ITV's south of England company Southern Television in Southampton. He was a reporter, industrial reporter, host, and documentary producer. Before Mountbatten was assassinated by the IRA in 1979, he spent six weeks in Ford Open Prison to produce a half-hour film.
He joined ITN in 1980 as a business reporter and was soon joined as one of the company's growing list of additional newsreaders. He worked with ITN's Channel 4 News from 1983 to 1986, as well as a host of ITN's News from 5.45.
As the full story of the tragedy unfolded, Stewart provided live coverage of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. A two-minute newsflash turned into an unscripted, one-hour special program. On the night of the Pan Am jet's bombing of Lockerbie, he also anchored the award-winning coverage of the memorial service for the victims, with Sandy Gallagher.
He moved back to ITN's flagship News at Ten bulletin in May 1989, which he hosted live from the Berlin Wall's fall before spending a year in the United States as ITN's Washington reporter. He was sent to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, four days after recovering from his Washington Dhahran assignment, to head ITN's coverage of the Gulf War. News at Ten, live from Saudi Arabia for two months. Stewart became the first British television journalist to broadcast live from Kuwait City at the end of February. A week before returning to the United Kingdom, he appeared on News at Ten from Kuwait.
Stewart's presence in the 1992 Budget made ITN's network coverage of the annual event on television for the ninth year. Sir Alastair Burnet, who retired from ITN in 1991, was his fifth year anchoring the program.
During his tenure with ITN, he has also appeared on several of the ITV network's other special programs, including the State Openings of Parliament, numerous by-elections, state visits, and for Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer's wedding.

He was the main host of Election Night Live: America Decides, ITV's late-night show covering the 2008 US presidential election.
He became the co-presenter of the ITV Lunchtime News in February 2007, replacing Nicholas Owen. Three debates were scheduled, produced by ITV, the BBC, and Sky. ITV drew the first debate by random numbers and chose Stewart to act as moderator.
Stewart received honorary doctorates from the University of Plymouth in September 2010, and the University of Sunderland in 2012.

Stewart and Martin Shapland, a black man, became embroiled in a controversies on Twitter in early January 2020. Stewart sent Shapland a tweet referring to the fact that he is "most ignorant of what he's most assurgent of," in the Shakespeare play Measure for Measure. Public concerns regarding this article and others have been received by ITN. Stewart deactivated his Twitter account on January 29, 2020, announcing that he would not be stepping down as an ITV News host. An ITN source said his departure came after "multiple "errors of judgment" in his use of social media, not just the Measure for Measure quote. After Stewart's departure, Shapland said, "I know Mr Stewart has acknowledged the terms he used were wrong and has expressed regret for what transpired." I thank him for that. It's regrettable that he has decided to stand down, but I have no interest in it."
Stewart appeared on Talkradio later this year. In early April 2021, it was confirmed that he would join GB News to host a weekend news and current affairs show. Following a hip injury, he announced on July 2021 that he would temporarily suspend hosting on GB News until returning to work on August 2021. From the 30th of August to the 3rd of September, Andrew Neil was covering for him.
