Alan Charles Wilder (born 1 June 1959) is an English musician, composer, arranger, and record producer, as well as a former member of Depeche Mode from 1982 to 1995.
Recoil became his principal musical venture since his departure from the band, beginning as a side project to Depeche Mode in 1986.
Wilder has also provided production and remixing support to the bands Nitzer Ebb and Curve. He is a classically trained guitarist.
Early years
Alan Charles Wilder was born in Acton, West London, and was raised in a middle class household. He started playing piano at the age of eight through the encouragement of his parents. He studied flute at St Clement Danes grammar school and became a leading musician in his school bands later on. Alan spent time at DJM Studios as a studio assistant after school. (as Alan Normal): He ended up appearing in bands such as The Dragons and Dafne & the Tenderspots.
