Alan Edwin Gowling (born 16 March 1949) is an English footballer who competed as a forward for several clubs in the north of England.
Playing career
Gowling, a boy from Stockport, Cheshire, went to Manchester United by way of county schools and Manchester University, where he studied for a degree in economics. While attending university, he played for Manchester United juniors and scored seven goals in a 'B' match. He earned the nickname "Bamber" after Bamber Gascoigne, the host of the University Challenge, due to his education.
Against Stoke City, Gowling made his goalscoring league debut. He played his last game for Manchester United against Stoke City, and came as a replacement for Bobby Charlton. In a game against Southampton on February 20, 1971, he played 87 times for Manchester United and scored four. However, Gowling was never really a first choice player at the club, and he loved his longest tenure with the team as a player in midfield in 1971–72. In June 1972, he was sold to Huddersfield Town for £65,000.
He joined Newcastle United as a strike partner for Malcolm Macdonald after a frustrating time at Huddersfield that culminated in two relegations. In the 1976 League Cup Final loss at Manchester City, he scored their only goal. The workmanlike Gowling was favored by Gordon Lee to the stylish Macdonald, scoring 30 goals in 92 league appearances before moving to Bolton Wanderers in 1978, Nicknamed the "Galloping Chip." After a time at Preston North End, he retired from football in 1984, aged 36.
Gowling earned England caps at an amateur, schoolboy, and under the age of 23. In the qualifying tournament for the 1968 Summer Olympics, Gowling represented the British Olympic team.
