Life and career

Alan Doyle was born and raised in Petty Harbour, Newfoundland, in a Roman Catholic family. He studied at Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John's, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. It's also there that he met Séan McCann, Bob Hallett, and Darrell Power, with whom he established Great Big Sea. He plays electric and acoustic guitars as well as the bouzouki for live performances, but he has been known to play mandolin and banjo.

Doyle and John Brenton performed in a duo with Staggering Home before Great Big Sea. The New Sandells, a teen, performed in his uncle's band.

Doyle has also worked on a few stage, television, and film projects. He appeared as an extra in Farley Mowat's book A Whale for the Killing, which was shot in his hometown as a child. In his hometown's "24-Hour Musical" performance of Grease, he has also performed at regional arts awards shows in Atlantic Canada, appeared as a host on the Juno Awards, and performed onstage. He composed music for the CBC comedy Hatching, Matching, and Dispatching, starring Mary Walsh in 2005. In 2006, he was featured in Been Made Away With directed by Walsh for the film Young Triffie's Been Made Away With. Michelle Doyle, Doyle's sister, has also produced an album.

Doyle has been linked to Russell Crowe and his bands 30 Odd Foot of Grunts and The Ordinary Fear of God, having produced and co-written several songs on Crowe's album, My Hand, My Heart, and appearing in several shows with Crowe. They released The Crowe/Doyle Songbook Vol. III in 2011 with 9 tracks in both acoustic demo and finished format, totaling 18. In Ridley Scott's Robin Hood, Doyle was also cast as Allan A'Dayle alongside Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Kevin Durand, and Scott Grimes. In the film Winter's Tale, he appeared alongside Crowe and Durand, as well as Will Smith and Colin Farrell.

He co-authored and performed "Middle of Nowhere," written for the Law & Order episode "Broad Channel."

Doyle appeared on three episodes of the CBC television series Republic of Doyle as Wolf Redmond. He was sent to jail on suspicion of B&Es and a few robberies in season 2, episode 2. After the foursome costarred on Robin Hood, Doyle, Kevin Durand, and Scott Grimes appeared on the first show of Republic of Doyle's third season. On season 4, episode 6, he made his third appearance – the second with Grimes – was his third. In an episode of Murdoch Mysteries' tenth season, he appeared in an episode.

Doyle's first solo album, Boy on Bridge, was released in 2012. As a young child, Doyle was a nod to Doyle's reputation as the "boy on bridge" in the film A Whale for the Killing. "I've Seen a Little," the album's first single, as well as Canadian singer Jim Cuddy, Ron Hynes, and actor-musician Russell Crowe. For a 2012 Juno, the video for the second single, "Testify," was nominated. A film crew filmed the album, resulting in Joel Stewart and John Vatcher's documentary Boy on Bridge.

Doyle, a member of Great Big Sea, was featured on Canadian country artist Dean Brody's 2012 album titled Dirt, as a Friday in the track "It's Friday."

Doyle wrote Where I Belong, a memoir about his youth growing up in Newfoundland and Labrador, in 2014.

So Let's Go, Doyle's second solo album, So Let's Go!, was released on January 20, 2015.

In 2017, he appeared in "A Murdog Mysteries," a Murdoch Mysteries episode.

A Week at the Warehouse, Doyle's third solo album, was released on October 13, 2017. On October 17, his second book, titled A Newfoundlander in Canada: Always Going Somewhere, Always Coming Home.

At the 2022 Charlottetown Festival, he will debut in Tell Tale Harbour, a musical comedy. The tale is based on Ken Scott's screenplay La grande séduction, which was made into the 2003 award-winning film Seducing Doctor Lewis. Doyle served as both a co-writer and a co-writer of music and lyrics with Bob Foster. Edward Riche, an award-winning writer, has also been named as one of the authors of a book of the musical.
