Alain Johannes Mociulski (born May 2, 1962) is a Chilean-American multi-instrumentalist and singer whose main instruments are guitar and drums.
He is a founding member of several bands, including the alternative rock band Eleven, and has appeared on stages including Hard Rock City, Them Crooked Vultures, PJ Harvey, Arctic Monkeys, Mark Lanegan, and The Desert Sessions, both as a musician and a producer. Alain Johannes, the nephew of Chilean nueva ola singer Peter Rock, was born in Santiago de Chile.
Career
Johannes formed Chain Reaction (later Anthym) with Hillel Slovak, Todd Strassman, and Jack Irons in his teenage years. What Is This band was later renamed What Is This. Chris Hutchinson replaced Todd Strassman after leaving the band.
In 1987, Johannes and Natasha Shneider released the album Walk the Moon under MCA's banner. Chris Hutchinson and Jack Irons appeared on some of the tracks.
Eleven was born in 1990 and released their debut album Awake in a Dream in 1991, which also included the pop based singles "Rainbows End" and "All Together" as a result. They continued this trend with regular launches Eleven in 1993, Thunk! Avantgardedog in 2000, and Howling Book in 2003.
Johannes was the only other participant on Jason Falkner's debut album in 1996. He was also a major contributor to Chris Cornell's 1999 solo album Euphoria Morning as a guitarist, writer, and producer. In addition to that, he appeared on stage as part of Chris Cornell's band in support of this album. He mixed and appeared on Jack Irons' first solo album, Attention Dimension, which was released in 2004, and he co-wrote on Danish stoner rock band The Royal Highness.
He joined Queens of the Stone Age in 2005 and performed guitar and bass on Lullabies to Paralyze. He appeared on Lullabies' predecessor, Songs for the Deaf, and had also co-written the track "Hanging Tree" during one of The Desert Sessions. He will be on the tour for the album and appears on the live DVD, Over the Years and Through the Woods, in the main concert. Johannes played a key role in Lullabies' sequel, Era Vulgaris, but he and Natasha Shneider decided to focus on Eleven, and the pair bowed out of touring before the album's promotion began.
Johannes was a member of Brody Dalle's Spinnerette, a post-Distillers venture.
He joined Them Crooked Vultures in August 2009, alongside Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, and former Led Zeppelin bass player John Paul Jones. On their 2009–2010 tour, Johannes played guitar, bass, keys, and backing vocals, often during his own solo guitar section.
