Albert Lee Toon Jr. (born April 30, 1963) is a retired American football wide receiver who played for the New York Jets of the National Football League (NFL) for eight seasons.

Toon made multiple school football records for the Wisconsin Badgers in two separate years as a member of the University of Wisconsin.

The three-time Pro Bowl pickee spent his entire NFL career with the Jets (1985-1992), leading his team and the league in receptions during the 1980s.

He is considered one of the Jets' all-time best wide receivers and overall players in franchise history.

Early life

Toon was known for his successes in both track and field in high school. Toon is one of three Newport News Peninsula District athletes to reach 50 feet in the triple jump, which he did three times. In the long run, he reached a height of 23 feet. Toon's football team, he used his jumping ability as a wide receiver.

From 1981 to 1984, Toon played football and ran track at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. At the end of his three-season play with the Wisconsin Badgers, Toon set a new Big Ten single game receiver record (19) while at the UniversityW and established new school career football records for receptions (131), receiving yards (2,103) and touchdown catches (19). When qualifying for the Olympic Trials in 1983 in the 110 High Hurdles and the Triple Jump, he also set new Big Ten and school records in terms of track and field in the Triple Jump.

Personal life

Toon is married to Jane and has a son and three children. Nick, his uncle, was a football standout in high school at Middleton, Wisconsin, and he played for the Wisconsin Badgers as his father did. Nicholas Toon was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the 4th round of the 2012 NFL Draft and spent four years in the league. He now owns and operates an online retail shopping website, as well as a focus on real estate ownership and management with his wife.

Kirby's daughter, Kirby, was a favorite walk-on in volleyball at UW-Madison. Kirby is currently working for Kimberly Clark. Molly and Sydney, his other children, also played volleyball. Molly competed for volleyball at the University of Michigan and worked with Aerotek in Arizona, while Toon's youngest daughter, Sydney, played two seasons of volleyball at University of Wisconsin Whitewater, after her prep experience at Middleton High School. Molly's mother was killed by her father in a suspected murder-suicide case in 2021.

Professional career

In the 1st round (th overall) of the 1985 NFL Draft, the New York Jets selected him. During his 1985 rookie season, Toon became the Jets' second leading receiver. He was voted to the Pro Bowl three times. Toon's best year as a pro came in 1988, when he led the league with 93 receptions. Toon died at the age of 29 in 1992 as a result of at least nine concussions in his eight-year career.

Toon is one of only two active players in NFL history to play fewer than 110 games and still have over 500 receptions. Kellen Winslow Sr., a Hall of Famer, is the other.
