He has appeared on several Australian television series including Superwog.
Career
In 1990, Saleh first appeared in a stand-up comedy. "Peter Saleh" was a alias for a time, "so that people would assume I was white," he says. "Peter" seemed to be a common name. 'Akmal' is such a strange word, it's impossible to remember. He co-wrote and appeared in the series All Australians are Boofta and also the best with fellow comedians Anthony Mir and Gary Eck, which had successful runs in several Sydney venues. Bound And Gagged and Hoot were followed by the live shows at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The trio created The Fifty-Foot Foot Show for The Comedy Channel in 1999. Saleh's real name was on display; he claims he did not bother to use his stage name because he didn't expect that so many people would watch a mystery cable television show. "But oddly enough, many people saw it and said, 'Hey Akmal, good show mate!" says the street. "I Loved The Fifty-Foot Exhibition," the author says. He says it's much nicer to be called by his real name, and he's been doing well under it ever since. Saleh has also worked with Mir and Eck on the 2002 film You Can't Stop The Murders, which he co-wrote and starred in.
Saleh has appeared in both Australian and international comedy festivals as well as in Europe and overseas. He often jokes about his own ethnicity and stereotypes of Middle Easterners. However, he claims he does not want to be branded as a "ethnic comic" and wants to be able to discuss "a broad range of topics." He says he is most at ease performing stand-up: "It's the thing that I do best." I'm not a radio guy. I'm a comedian on radio.
Saleh first appeared on Australian radio in January 2007, swapping in for Merrick and Rosso on Nova for three weeks throughout the summer before receiving his own drive time display. He was initially hired to co-host the show alongside actor Matthew Newton, but Newton was later dropped after news broke that he was facing assault charges involving a former woman, prompting Saleh to make his solo debut. Since being co-hosted by Saleh, comedians Cal Wilson and Ed Kavalee, the show has seen several changes.
Saleh has appeared on numerous Australian television shows, including "I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here," Rove Live, The Footy Show (rugby league), The Glass House, In Siberia, Today, This Is It's Saturday, Thank God You're Here, Big Questions, Hughesy, We Have a Problem, Spicks and Specks, Tracey McBean, Tracey McBean, and is a regular panel member of Good News Week,
Akmal Saleh was appointed ambassador for the Top Blokes Foundation in 2013. As of 2013, Saleh lives in Queanbeyan.
