Ai Yazawa Career

Career

Tenshi Nanka Ja Nai, Neighborhood Story, Paradise Kiss, and Nana are some of Yazawa's most popular manga. She also performed an animated version of herself in the final episode of the Neighborhood Story anime. Vertical, Inc. released all five volumes of Paradise Kiss in English. Nana appeared in the now-defunct American manga newspaper Shojo Beat. In 2003, Yazawa was given the Shogakukan Manga Award for Nana. Nana was turned into an anime (produced by Madhouse) and a popular film in Japan with a sequel.

Yazawa had developed a sudden illness and had to be sent to the hospital for medical assistance, putting Nana on hiatus in June 2009. She returned from the hospital in April 2010, but it has yet to be announced when or if Nana will continue.

Since putting Nana on hold, Yazawa has been working on a number of small illustrative projects. She created artwork for singer JUJU's single Iiwake in 2017 and a celebratory illustration for Space Channel 5 VR in 2020, added new photos from her series Tenshi Nanka Ja Nai and Neighborhood Story in 2016, and released a new "Junko's Room" chapter, her first new manga in over three years, in 2013.

Young women and their families are generally focused on young women and their relationships in Yazawa's talelines. The characters are all chic, and she is known particularly for her youthful sense of fashion. Yazawa herself attended a fashion school after high school, but she did not finish her studies there. Another significant point is her often rebellious characters, who are often compared to the more conventional ones.
