Agha Hasan Abedi (Urdu) (14 May 1922 – 5 August 1995) was a Pakistani banker and convicted felon who established Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) in Pakistan and witnessed its demise after one of the largest banking fraud scandals in history was unearthed. He was sentenced to eight years in jail for fraud before his death by a United Arab Emirates court. United Bank Limited was also founded by Abedi. Abedi underwent heart transplant surgery in 1988 and died as a result of a heart attack in Karachi on August 5th, 1995.
Early life and education
Agha Hasan Abedi was born in Lucknow, British India, to a middle-class family with members who served as consultants and courtiers to the Nawab of Awadh. He earned his master's degree in English literature as well as a law degree from Lucknow University. After the establishment of Pakistan in 1947, Abedi migrated to Pakistan.

Career
Abedi began his career at the age of 24 when he joined Habib Bank Limited.
Abedi founded the United Bank Limited in 1959 (UBL). He was both the Founder and the first President. UBL became Pakistan's second largest bank under his stewardship. Abedi introduced the idea of customized service and banking assistance to trade and industry, paying particular attention to the bank's overseas activities. Abedi was one of the first to understand the benefits of the oil boom in the Persian Gulf, leading to close economic cooperation between Pakistan and the UAE. (UAE).
