Adam Nathaniel Yauch (pronounced August 5, 1964 – May 4, 2012) was an American rapper, bass player, and filmmaker who was a founding member of the Hip Hop group Beastie Boys.
He founded Oscilloscope Laboratories, an independent film production and distribution firm headquartered in New York City, using the stage name MCA.Yauch founded Oscilloscope Laboratories.
He was active in the Tibetan liberation movement and arranged the Tibetan Freedom Concert as a Buddhist.
He died of parotid cancer in 2012 at the age of 52.
Early life and education
Yauch was the first child born in Brooklyn, New York City. Noel was an architect, and Frances was a social worker. Yauch's mother, Josephine, and his father, Catholic, had a non-religious upbringing in Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn.
In Brooklyn's Midwood neighborhood, Yauch attended Edward R. Murrow High School. He taught himself to play the bass guitar in high school and formed Beastie Boys with John Berry, Kate Schellenbach, and Michael Diamond. On his 17th birthday, they appeared at their first performance, although they were also a hardcore punk band in the vein of Reagan Youth. He attended Bard College for two years before being forced to leave Bard College.

Personal life and views
Yauch was a devoted Buddhist. He became a leading figure in the Tibetan independence movement, founding the Milarepa Fund, a non-profit group dedicated to Tibetan independence, and arranging several benefit concerts to promote the cause, including the Tibetan Freedom Concert.
He met Tibetan American Dechen Wangdu in 1995 while attending a lecture by the Dalai Lama at Harvard University. They married in 1998 and had their daughter, Tenzin Losel, the same year.
When receiving the Video Vanguard Award in 1998, Yauch condemned America's wars in Muslim countries and prejudice against Muslims and Arabs. Cihan Kaan wrote an obituary for Al Jazeera, that Yauch was "Muslim Americans' hero" and America's personal Jewish Gandhi."
