Adapted from Jules Verne's 19th-century novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, the Disney produced adventure film follows a ship sent to investigate a trend of mysterious sinkings. The crew members encounter the Captain Nemo-commanded submarine, The Nautilus.

It is considered a precursor of the steampunk genre. It won Academy Awards for Best Art Direction - Color and Best Special Effects, and was also nominated for Best Film Editing.
