Career
Van Gelder, a native of Waalwijk, the Netherlands, received the gold medal in the men's rings at the 2005 European Championships in Debrecen, Hungary. At the 2005 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Melbourne, Australia, he became the world champion in the same sport. He gained bronze at the 2006 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Aarhus, Denmark. He received a silver medal at the 2007 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart, Germany.
On July 13, 2009, he revealed that he used cocaine three days before the Dutch championships in Rotterdam. Van Gelder said he deeply regretted his "lapse" and branded himself "incredibly stupid." Since being barred by the Dutch Gymnastics Union, he has since had to return his national championship gold medal. Because of the suspension, he will not be allowed to the Olympic Games in 2012. He was also banned from his service with the Dutch military because the Dutch military has a 'zero tolerance' drugs policy.
He was pulled out of the 2010 Worlds a few days before, with the team citing personal medical reasons and refusing to answer questions about drugs.
At the CAS in 2011, LaShawn Merritt appealed the general rule that after a suspension, an individual is not eligible to attend the next Olympic Games. The appeal was accepted, and Van Gelder had a chance to qualify, thereby. He needed to win a good result at the 2011 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, but he was disqualified.
He reached the finals on rings at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He was suspended from the Dutch team on August 8, 2016 (one week before the finals), because of team rules, he could not return to the Olympic Village until early next morning after drinking alcohol off-premises. The Dutch media immediately referred to Van Gelder as "lord of the drinks," as a spin on his name "lord of the rings." A request for a provisional injunction requiring the National Olympic Committee to reinstate Van Gelder's position in the finals was turned down.
