They finished second in first round heat, behind Jamaica, but ahead of Germany and China. Due to a mistake in the baton exchange, the Jamaican team did not complete. Due to a doping offence by Chermoshanskaya, Gushchina and her three Russian teammates were disqualified from their Olympic gold medal in August 2016.
All three of Gushchina's Olympic medals have been forfeited after the announcement of the disqualification of the 2012 Russian 4x400 team as a result of Antonina Krivoshapka's doping offence.

During the medal ceremony for the women's 4400 meters relay photos of Kseniya Ryzhova and Yuliya Gushchina sharing a kiss on the lips, a demonstration against the anti-gay laws was broadcast on social media and was mistook it for a protest against the anti-gay laws. Both Ryzhova and Gushchina denied having intended to stage such a demonstration, rather than being content with their athletic achievements and saying they were married to men. Despite the fact that news were mainly focusing on the pair, the four Russian relay runners briefly kissed each other on the podium. Ryzhova referred to her as insulting because she is a member of the LGBT community. Vitaly Mutko, Russia's Minister of Sport, said that Western media had overemphasised the issue, noting that same-sex relations are not unlawful in Russia and that domestic media has less coverage of the situation.
