Personal life
Yasmin Siraj was born in Boston and grew up in Brookline. Aban Makarechian, an Iranian immigrant, and her father Ra'ad Siraj, a narcologist, is the managing director of The Bank of New York Mellon, which has a Saudi Arabian history. Layla is her elder sister, and Amir is her younger brother.
Siraj has also excelled at playing piano, in addition to skating. She has received accolades at the American Fine Arts Festival and appeared three times at Carnegie Hall.
Siraj attended Brookline High School, graduating in 2014. She later attended Harvard College, where The Harvard Crimson, the student newspaper, named her one of the top fifteen seniors of 2017-18.
Career
Siraj began skating at the age of two, following her sister Layla. Sheryl Franks and Bobby Martin provided private lessons at the Skating Club of Boston until the age of eight, when she joined coaches Mark Mitchell and Peter Johansson.
Siraj won the junior silver medal at the United States Championships in 2010. She made her ISU Junior Grand Prix debut in the following years, winning two silver medals and qualifying for the JGP Final where she placed seventh. In her senior national debut at the 2011 U.S. Championships, she came in eighth place.
Siraj placed 15th at the 2012 US Nationals but returned the following year, placing 6th at the 2013 U.S. Championships. She was sent to the 2013 World Junior Championships, where she came in 11th place.
Siraj placed sixth at the Junior Grand Prix of Latvia in 2013, her first JGP assignment of the season. She took gold at the New England Regionals for the third year in a row, defeating the opposition by over 16 points.
Siraj finished 16th at the 2014 US Nationals, after which she resigned. She began skating with the Haydenettes, an award-winning synchronized skating team.
