INTERVIEW BY IAN LADYMAN: One of Fabian Hurzeler's earliest football memories is of watching Manchester United's 1999 Champions League final defeat of Bayern Munich from his bed. He was six years old. 'My father thought I was sleeping, but of course I had a little bit of my eyes open,' recalled the Brighton manager. Hurzeler, now 31, was later to be coached by current United manager Erik ten Hag in Bayern Munich's second team. In August, Hurzeler and Ten Hag stood side by side on the touchline in the Premier League and Brighton won.

CRAIG HOPE: Alexander Isak is set to return from injury for Newcastle this weekend in a huge boost for Eddie Howe - but Callum Wilson may need a little bit longer. The 2024-25 season is almost upon us, with Manchester United and Fulham set to kickstart the new Premier League campaign at Old Trafford on Friday. A football finance expert believes Manchester United were close to breaching the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) last season, but managed to comply with the top-flight's restrictions thanks to two 'exceptional allowances.' Last season, Everton were sanctioned twice by the Premier League for falling foul of their financial restrictions, with the Toffees being deducted a total of eight points for two separate charges after falling foul of the rules. Nottingham Forest were also handed a four-point fine for admitting a breach of the league's rules. PSR has caused chaos around the English top-flight, with teams having to think cleverly on how to comply with the rules.

Newcastle's hopes of overcoming financial strains have suffered a setback as Yankuba Minteh is refusing to join Lyon.  The Magpies need to sell players by 30 June to make sure of avoiding being charged with breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules [PSR], which would almost certainly lead to them being docked points next season. Newcastle and Lyon had agreed a £40m deal for the Minteh, who spent last season on loan at Feyenoord. 

SIMON JONES: The 24-year old Senegal international has been a long-term target for the Goodison club since his time at Sheffield United and he has failed to make an impact with Marseille. Everton have focused on Ndiaye after talks for Newcastle winger Yankuba Minteh hit an impasse. Everton had offered £30m for Minteh as part of discussions to sell Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Newcastle for £38m in a separate deal. However, Lyon offered £40m for Minteh and that has been accepted.

Newcastle have ended their interest in signing Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with the decision likely to end the Toffees pursuit of Yankuba Minteh. Talks had been ongoing between the clubs over a potential deal for Calvert-Lewin. Newcastle have now opted to walk away having deemed the £40m asking price to be too costly. 

SIMON JONES: Everton are stepping up their interest in Newcastle United winger Yankuba Minteh as conversations continue over the proposed sale of striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Eddie Howe's side. Mail Sport reported last month that early talks had taken place over the two transfers with both clubs looking at sales to meet profit and sustainability guidelines by June 30. Calvert-Lewin has been on Newcastle's radar for over a year but they had concerns over his injury record. However, he put work in on his conditioning last summer so that he was more robust and was able to lead the line at Everton for most of the season.

Everton are showing interest in Newcastle United winger Yankuba Minteh. The 19-year old has enjoyed a stand out season on loan at Feyenoord in Holland scoring 11 goals - ten in the league. He joined Newcastle from Danish side OB last year for £6million and was immediately sent out on loan. The Gambia international gained Champions League experience and ended the season by winning the Dutch Cup but was sent off in the process.

Ajax's season from hell began on Sunday, when they were defeated 6-0 by Feyenoord, their biggest-ever defeat in De Klassieker and Evie history. As the Amsterdam club was humiliated at De Kuip, Newcastle United loanee Yankuba Minteh netted twice, as did Igor Paixao, with David Hancko and Quinten Timber also on target. Jordan Henderson, the England midfielder, was forced to miss the game due to sickness, but it would not have been able to stem the tide of Feyenoord goals.

CRAIG HOPE: Despite the marches in Sheffield on Wednesday, the overcrowding in Newcastle's FA Cup match against Hillsborough last year has now been described as a "near miss" by the organisers. After we highlighted fears raised by followers of Leppings Lane End, where 97 Liverpool supporters died after a crush in the 1989 FA Cup semi-finals, Mail Sport has been barred from attending matches by the Championship club. Fans of Newcastle's frightening in the concourse and tunnel entrance to the seating area prior to kick-off. We reported their evidence and were informed by the club that we were no longer accepted at Hillsborough.

STEPHEN MCGOWAN AT CELTIC PARK: The Champions League Celtic's ten-year streak of woe finally came to an end. Heroism has appeared in the most unexpected quarters at times. Gustaf Lagerbielke's prospects had been bleak after a £3 million sign in the summer. Since the Parkhead preview, the young defender seemed to have to buy a season ticket to get back to the park. The late goal that gave Celtic's first Champions League victory in six years since defeating Ajax in October 2013 gave Brendan Rodgers a brief reminder that he was only named Player of the year.
