William Du Pont Jr. Career

Marriages, family, and career

Jean Liseter Austin married du Pont on January 1, 1919. In media accounts, their marriage reception in Rosemont, Pennsylvania, was described as the "Wedding of the Century" because of each family's wealth. William Liseter Austin, Jean's father, was a railroad baron at Baldwin Locomotive Works. As a wedding gift, he gave the couple more than 600 acres (2.4 km2) of property. On the property in 1922, William's father built Liseter Hall for them. The three-story Georgian mansion was a recreation of Montpelier, where du Pont had grown up.

In 1921, Du Pont was elected to the board of directors of the Delaware Trust Company, where his father was president (and later chairman of the board). His banking career will continue until his death. On the death of his father, William inherited the Bellevue Hall estate in Delaware in 1928. The castle, which du Pont had converted into another recreation of his boyhood home of Montpelier, was located in 1855. William assumed the role after his father's death, which also created a vacancy in the Delaware Trust Company's presidency.

On their farm, Du Pont and his wife developed a popular horse farm. Liseter Hall Farm was considered the ne plus ultra of Mid-Atlantic horse facilities in the 1920s and 1930s. The indoor galloping track was the first in the United States; a 40-foot (12 m)-long indoor riding ring, used by trainers for teaching young horses; a hunting barn; a loading barn with ramps; and a grassy, half-mile chute connecting the racing track with the race horse, hunter, and show horse barns. A hunting barn, two indoor training tracks, and an outdoor track were all built at the Bellevue Hall estate, as shown above.

Four children were born together, two girls and two boys, Du Pont and Jean. In February 1941, they divorced when John, the youngest of the family, was 2 years old. Jean Liseter du Pont kept the house that her father gave her. Following the divorce, du Pont moved his permanent residence to Bellevue Hall.

In 1947, Du Pont married Margaret Osborne, a tennis champion. For the benefit of his wife, he built both an indoor and outdoor tennis court in Bellevue. They had a son, William du Pont III, who was born on July 22, 1952. Du Pont was named chairman of the Delaware Trust Company in the same year, maintaining his position as president as well. In 1964, Osborne and du Pont divorced. William du Pont III, their son, was also a member of thoroughbreds and later bought Pillar Stud in Lexington, Kentucky.
