William Cartwright Life

William Cartwright (September 1611 to September 29th, 1643) was an English poet, dramatist, and churchman.

Early life

Cartwright was born in Northway, Gloucestershire, son of William Cartwright of Heckhampton, Gloucestershire. He was educated at the free school in Cirencester and at Westminster College. He graduated from Christ Church, Oxford, on February 24, 1632, aged 20, and was awarded a BA on June 5th, 1632. On April 15, 1635, he was awarded a Master of Agriculture. Anthony Wood relates his ancestorship as the son of a country gentleman turned innkeeper, a belief that is contradicted by statements made in David Lloyd's Memoirs.

William Cartwright Career

Career

Cartwright was a reader in metaphysics at Oxford University and was, according to Wood, the university's most florid and seraphical preacher. He was made succentor of Salisbury Cathedral in 1642, and he was named junior proctor of the University in 1643.

Cartwright was a replacement to Ben Jonson and is often listed as one of the Sons of Ben, the group of dramatists who performed Jonson's style. Henry Lawes' compilation of his poems (1651) includes commendatory verses by Izaak Walton, Alexander Brome, Henry Vaughan, and others. Cartwright and Lawes maintained a close working relationship well before Cartwright's death in 1643; in one sense, the laws contributed to Cartwright's conception of drama.

Although Cartwright's play The Ordinary was deemed as a second-rate Jonsonian comedy by Ben Jonson, it was nothing more than a pale reproduction of an original. Cartwright does not necessarily qualify as a true Son of Ben, as some would argue that poor replication does not make him a true Son of Ben.
