UEFA managing director for refereeing Roberto Rosetti has defended the decision not to award Scotland a penalty during their heartbreaking defeat to Hungary on Sunday. The Scots were denied what they believed was a clear penalty before the Hungarians netted a 100th minute winner to send them home. Southampton's Stuart Armstrong went down in the box following contact from Hungary defender Willi Orban, but referee Facundo Tello waved play on and was not asked to review the incident by his VAR assistants.

Referee Facundo Tello and VAR Alejandro Hernandez have reportedly been axed alongside the two assistants that night, Gabriel Chade and Ezequiel Brailovsky. Tello enraged Scotland boss Steve Clarke when Stuart Armstrong went down under an ugly challenge from Willi Orban in the 79th minute and nothing was given. The Tartan Army were desperate for a goal to make the last 16 of Euro 2024 but failed to score and conceded in stoppage time as their dreams disintegrated .
Steve Clarke goes on furious rant about Argentine referee who failed to award Scotland a penalty against Hungary, scoffing 'he probably doesn't speak the language' and asking 'why is there not a European referee?'

Steve Clarke questioned UEFA's appointment of referee Facundo Tello based on his nationality after Scotland were knocked out of Euro 2024 by Hungary on Sunday. Scotland boss Clarke saw his side fall to a 1-0 defeat in Stuttgart that left them with just one point from their three group games. After failing to record a single shot on target, Scotland deserved to lose, although Hungary's winning goal did not arrived until the 100th minute. However, the Scots may well have won had a strong penalty appeal in the 79th minute not been turned down by Tello and his team of South American officials.
Steve Clarke admits that sadness is his 'overriding feeling' after Scotland crashed out of Euro 2024 at the hands of Hungary... but he doesn't understand how VAR did not award his side a penalty

AADAM PATEL AT THE MHPARENA: 'I'm sad - disappointed and sad,' said Clarke. 'The overriding feeling is to be sad for everyone - for the supporters and the country. And the players are just as sad as everyone else.' added the Scotland boss. Defeat for Scotland means that for the 12th time in a row, they have now failed to make it out of their group at a major tournament. Despite knowing that a win would put them in a strong position to qualify, Clarke's side failed to have a shot on target until injury time but were denied a potential penalty in the second half by Argentinian referee Facundo Tello for a challenge by Willi Orban on Stuart Armstrong. And the Scotland manager revealed his frustration after there was no VAR check in Stuttgart.

The Magyarok are on a 14-game unbeaten streak stretching back to September 2022. Their last tournament, the 2022-23 Nations League , saw them beat England twice - including a 4-0 trouncing at Molineux - defeat Germany once, and finish second in a group also containing reigning European champions Italy. Headlines will naturally gravitate towards Dominik Szoboszlai, but look out for goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi and defender Willi Orban, long-time servants of the RB Leipzig revolution, as well as Freiburg winger Roland Sallai, scorer of fantastic goals. Oh, and, er, Callum Styles, a Bury lad and Barnsley full-back who has never played his club football outside England, doesn't speak Hungarian, and only found out that his grandmother was from there in 2020.
