Wikus van Heerden (born in Johannesburg) is a former South African rugby union footballer who competed as a flanker and ended his career with the Lions and the Golden Lions in the national Currie Cup competition.
Van Heerden has also competed for the Springboks, the national team.
He was the captain of the Cats (now known as the Lions) before his move to the Bulls.
Despite having captained perpetually bad teams (such as the Cats/Lions during 2004, which only 4 games from 35 were won), Van Heerden is known for his high work rate, toughness, as well as his leadership experience. During the 2012 Currie Cup Premier Division season, he announced his retirement.
Career
Van Heerden made his Springbok debut against Scotland at Kings Park in Durban on June 7th, 2003. South Africa defeated the competition by 29 points to 25 points. For the second Test against the Scottish, he served at flanker for the second Test at Ellis Park, which South Africa also won, 28 to 19.
He was later included in South Africa's 2003 Tri Nations Series squad. At Newlands, he played against the Wallabies, who beat the Springboks 26 to 22. He also played against the All Blacks at Loftus Versfeld, and he was a reserve in another match against Australia at Suncorp Stadium, which the Springboks lost.
Van Heerden was a good 2007 Super 14 with the Bulls as the team's expert fetcher. In the Bulls' 92–3 win over the Reds at Loftus, scoring two tries in the process, his best game was in the Bulls' 92–3 victory. He was eventually accepted into the Springboks due to his work. Van Heerden played his first Test in four years against the Wallabies in Sydney in July 2007. Despite being regarded as the best Bok forward in this match, he did a good job, despite being in a second string Springbok XV. In the match against the All Blacks in Christchurch a week later, he was equally impressive. These performances earned him his spot in the Springbok's triumphant 2007 Rugby World Cup team.
Following his Currie Cup commitments with the Bulls, it was announced on May 16 that he would join Guinness Premiership Saracens in November 2008. In a 27-14 loss to London Irish at the Madejski Stadium on November 23, he scored a try on his first appearance for Saracens.
Saracens had been released in South Africa, where he would play for the Lions. This was a surprise, considering Saracens had said he would stay on the team through the season. In his first super rugby season back in South Africa, he broke his arm, but he was back for the Curriecup's first match. He broke his arm again in exactly the same way in this match, putting him out for several weeks. His father, Springbok Lock Moaner van Heerden, has been his father since he was a kid.
