Wallace "Wally" Amos, Jr. (born July 1, 1936) is an American television personality, entrepreneur, and author from Tallahassee, Florida.
He is the maker of the popular Amos chocolate-chip cookie, the Cookie Kahuna, and Aunt Della's Cookies gourmet cookie brands, and he was the host of the adult reading program Learn to Read.
Early life and education
Wallace & Ruby Amos were the first to meet Amos. He was born and raised in Tallahassee, Florida, until he was 12 years old. He and his aunt, who were living in New York City, where he attended the Food Trades Vocational High School, moved to New York City when his parents divorced. At a young age, he expressed an interest in cooking. Amos later developed his chocolate chip cookie recipe from his aunt Della Bryant, who would bake cookies for him. Amos modified his aunt Della's dish, which was still unusual because it included several ingredients that were not normally associated with chocolate chip cookies.
Amos dropped out of high school to join the United States Air Force a few months before graduation. From 1954 to 1957, he served at Hickam Air Force Base in Honolulu, Hawaii. He obtained his high school equivalency diploma before being honorably dismissed from the service.
Personal life
Amos married Christine (Harris) Amos, who later assisted him in creating the early products and packaging for Famous Amos cookies on July 1, 1979. Michael Amos, Gregory Amos, Sarah Amos, and musician Shawn Amos have all children.
Amos lived in Hawaii from 1977 to 2018. Amos is currently living in Columbia, South Carolina, where he is currently works on Aunt Della's Cookies.
Career
Amos, a native of New York City, went to college to become a secretary, and after graduating, he began working with the William Morris Agency as a mailroom clerk. He eventually became the agency's first African American talent agent. He hired Simon & Garfunkel and headed the agency's rock 'n' roll group. Amos attracted visitors by giving them chocolate chip cookies as part of their invitation to visit him. Diana Ross & the Supremes, Sam Cooke, and Marvin Gaye all played musicians.
A friend suggested to Amos that he open a store to sell his cookies in 1975, and the first Famous Amos cookie store opened in Los Angeles, California, in March of this year. With the help of a $25,000 loan from Marvin Gaye and Helen Reddy, he began his business. The corporation began to grow, and eventually, Famous Amos chocolate chip cookies would be available in supermarket stores around the country. He became such a well-known celebrity that he appeared in the Taxi episode "Latka's Cookies" in 1981. He was hired to give speeches as a result of his cookie company's success. He has written ten books, many of which have a self-help theme, such as The Cookie Crumbles and The Power in You.
John Rosica, Amos' long-time friend and publicist, introduced him to Literacy Volunteers of America in 1979. Amos has fought literacy and has taught thousands of adults how to read. He also hosted Learn to Read, a television series produced by Kentucky Educational Television and WXYZ-TV in 1987.
Amos was forced to sell the Famous Amos Company due to financial hardships, and because the word "Famous Amos" was trademarked by his former company, he was forced to use Uncle Noname's Cookie Company as his new company's name. Lou Avignone, a well-known Amos retailer at the time, heard Amos on a local radio talk show and, inspired by Amos' tale of his early business growth with Famous Amos and his spirit, he approached Amos about starting a new company. The two became partners in 1994 and then introduced Uncle Noname Gourmet Muffins. At the time, the company was focusing on fat-free, nutritious muffins. Uncle Noname was a member of Uncle Wally's Muffin Company in 1999. In over 3,500 stores around the country, the muffins are sold.
When Amos bought back his handmade cookies under a new brand, the Cookie Kahuna, an article in Fortune magazine lauded "the cookie comeback of 'Famous' Wally Amos." These cookies were sold in a Hawaii store, where Amos is based. They're available in the original chocolate chip, chocolate chip with pecans and butterscotch with macadamia nuts.
By NBC affiliate KSNV-TV in Las Vegas, Amos was dubbed "the King of cookies" in 2019.
Wally Amos' life was chronicled in Content Media Group's In 2020, the Great Cookie Comeback: reBaking Wally Amos. Jeff MacIntyre produced the film.
