Louis Cachet (born Kristian Vikernes; 11 February 1973), better known as Varg Vikernes (Norwegian: [vr] is a Norwegian writer and former musician best known for his early black metal albums and later crimes. His first four albums, which appeared under the name Burzum from 1991 to 1994, made him one of the most influential figures in black metal. He was found guilty of murder and arson in 1994 and served 15 years in prison.
Vikernes, a native of Bergen, began playing guitar at the age of 14 and formed his first band, Kalashnikov (later known as Uruk-Hai), in 1989. Around the same time, he would join Old Funeral, in which he briefly played guitar from 1989 to 1991. He performed on various compilation albums as well as various other compilation albums that were released years later. He performed with the band on the Devoured Carcass EP and others. He became involved in the early Norwegian black metal scene after founding Burzum. Vikernes, alongside other members of the scene, was accused of torching down four Christian churches in Norway in 1992. Vikernes denied committing the arson even though he endorsed them. He appeared on Mayhem's debut album De Mysteria Dom Sathanas in 1992–1993.
Vikernes fatally stabbed Mayhem guitarist Euronymous during an altercation at the latter's apartment in August 1993, and the guitarist was arrested shortly thereafter. Vikernes was found guilty of first-degree murder, church arson, and possession of bombs in May 1994. The killing was self-defense, according to Vikernes, who unsuccessfully pleaded for the charge to be reduced to voluntary manslaughter. He was sentenced to 21 years in prison, the highest penalty under Norwegian law. Vikernes founded the Norwegian Heathen Front during his imprisonment, and Burzum has released two ambient albums. He was released on parole in 2009, after which he and his wife and children moved to France, where he has continued to write and perform music. He was also a prolific YouTuber on ThuleanPersuade.com before the channel was taken down.
Vikernes, who has been dubbed by Sam Dunn as "the most popular metal musician of all time," is still reeling for his convictions, as well as his political and religious convictions. He endorsed views that combined Odinism and Esoteric Nazism, as well as openly supporting Nazism in the mid-late 1990s. He has since condemned the ideology and its affiliates, but critics continue to dismiss his views as far-right. Vikernes describes his convictions as "odalism" and favors a "pre-industrial European pagan society," condemning Christianity, Islam, Judaism, capitalism, sociology, and materialism.
Personal life
Vikernes has a son who was born in 2007 to Marie Cachet, his new wife. They were married the same year. In a 2008 interview, he and his wife were expecting a second child (Vikernes' third). He and his family gathered on a tiny farm in B, Telemark, after his release. They then moved to Salon-la-Tour, France's Corrèze department. He said he had six children and wanted more as of 2017. He revealed on Twitter in March 2021 that his wife had delivered their seventh child, a daughter.
Vikernes is a teetotaler who has never consumed alcohol or other recreational drugs. He also avoids the unnecessary use of pharmaceutical products.
After being released from jail, Louis Cachet was able to avoid public relations, but Varg Vikernes continues to follow Varg Vikernes in daily life.
