The world of work is radically changing. 1 in 5 people in the UK are now in non-traditional roles, and yet our employment rules are vastly out of date. The UK risks being trapped in a deregulatory race to the bottom on standards unless things change. A system of minimum employment rights will help those the most in need while also having the virtue of simplicity. Each year, we assemble experts from around the world with a passion for technology and policy to join our Fellows programme, shaping the global debate on policy opportunities presented by Web 3.0 and finding ways to fix what’s wrong with the Internet of today. Successful uses of participatory democracy in digital and technology policy are already underway. This can be seen with vTaiwan, the deliberative process on the fair regulation of Uber; the public engagement process that contributed to the Scottish Government’s AI strategy; and a citizens’ forum on disinformation in the Philippines. Beth Wiltshire looks at how we can use methods of participatory democracy to make better policy in a digital society. Posted by @institutegc on Oct 11, 2022 03:44PM

Gone are the days when the best jobs were concentrated in major cities. So Lauren Razavi examined the world of digital nomads and the policy realities of remote work. Her essay also offers a look at how how tech is redefining what it means to be a citizen in the 21st century. Posted by @institutegc on Oct 5, 2022 03:39PM

Afghanistan’s once thriving civil society has been torn apart by the resurgence of the Taliban, who regained control of the country in 2021. Journalists, government officials, women’s rights activists, musicians, artists, writers and academics who once were able to use their voices freely and openly have been silence. Today we hand our platform over to them so their voices can be heard again. #afghanistan Posted by @institutegc on Sep 26, 2022 04:03PM
