Thomas Patrick Welling (born April 26, 1977) is an American actor, director, producer, and model best known for his role as Clark Kent in The WB's Smallville (2001–2011).

Early life
Welling was born in Putnam Valley, New York. His family and friends travelled often, making stops in Wisconsin, Delaware, and Michigan. Welling attended Okemos High School in Okemos, Michigan, where he started acting in plays but then switched to sports. Welling played baseball and soccer, but basketball is his favorite sport. Welling married model Jamie White on Martha's Vineyard with Welling's family and then-Smallville co-star Kristin Kreuk and Michael Rosenbaum in attendance on July 5, 2002. Welling and White lived in Vancouver, British Columbia, but in March 2011, they returned to Los Angeles. Welling divorced White on October 17, 2013. In November 2015, the divorce was finalized.
Welling began dating Jessica Rose Lee, an equestrian and Saddle Club founder, in 2014. They revealed their involvement in April 2018. Both parents have two children, who were born in January 2019 and June 2021. In San Ynez, California, Welling and Lee married on November 30, 2019.

Career
Welling, a construction worker, was discovered in 1998 at a party in Nantucket by casting director Jennifer Starr, who was there finding new faces for a Tommy Hilfiger campaign and suggesting trying modeling. Welling modeled for the Louisa Modeling Agency until 2000, when he moved to Los Angeles. When planning to pursue an acting career, he modeled for Tommy Hilfiger, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Calvin Klein. Welling appeared in Angela Via's music video "Picture Perfect" in 2000, where he portrayed V's love interest. Welling also stated that he did not like modeling and that he was not an expert at it because it was all outside or from an outsider's point of view. Welling was cast in the WB superhero drama Smallville following a nationwide hunt for an actor to play Clark Kent. In an interview with a youth publication, Welling discussed the day he auditioned for the role: "I was on my way back from the Warner Bros. studio and stopping in a gas station to call my boss and ask him how it went." "Can you hold on a second?" said the guy on the phone as I called and got him on the phone. "You get it!" says the next thing I noticed, there are actually seven people on the other line, and almost in unison they say, 'Tom, you got it!'" says the man. The pilot debuted in October 2001 and became The WB's most highly rated debut with 8.4 million viewers. Welling told TV Guide that he resigned twice from his lead role, but after reading the script, he decided to take the job. He wasn't a Superman fan before being cast as Clark Kent, like Christopher Reeve. In fact, he continued to not read Superman comics: "I made a conscious decision not to read those books." We're doing something different right now, but I don't want it to influence what I'm doing, even subconsciously."
