Tom Maher Life

Tom Maher (born 4 September 1952 in Melbourne, Victoria) is the most successful coach in Women's National Basketball League history, winning nine WNBL titles.

He guided Nunawading Spectres to six titles, Perth, Canberra, and Bulleen to a bare end (A tenth eluded him when he had to abandon his position as a Sydney coach to take up a vacancy in the WNBA in 2001).

He had Sydney in first place when he left late in the season, and the club went on to win the championship with Karen Dalton at the helm. a.k.a.

Carrie Graf, who won seven titles, five with Sydney, and six with Canberra, as well as Jan Stirling, who led Adelaide to four titles, are the next best WNBL coaches. Maher was WNBL Coach of the Year in 1987 and 1992, and he is a Life Member of the WNBL. In 1996, Maher led Australia's women's national basketball team to their first Olympic medal (bronze), and then to bronze at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.

In Athens, 2004, he was head coach of New Zealand, where the Tall Ferns coached them to their best-ever result of eighth place.

In 2008, he coached the China women's national basketball team, finishing fourth overall. He was named coach of the Great Britain women's team in May 2009, replacing Mark Clark.

He coached Great Britain at the 2012 Summer Olympics, finishing eleventh overall.

Maher has been appointed as the head coach of China's national team for the 2016 Summer Olympics, marking his sixth Olympics appearance as a national head coach.
