Wetherspoons will serve pints for as little as £1.79 in over 700 of its pubs this month - but punters need to be quick to enjoy the boozy bargain. The popular pub chain announced that a 12-day beer festival will take place across all 809 Wetherspoons locations in the UK. From Wednesday October 9 to Sunday October 20, beer lovers can indulge in 30 different beers and real ales - with some travelling as far as from Japan , New Zealand , Canada and the USA. A fancy £3.5m Wetherspoons has opened its doors opposite Tom Kerridge's gastro pub in a picturesque riverside town but some locals have hit out at the new boozer for a strange reason. The well-known pub chain welcomed its first customers in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, at 8am with a line forming with excited punters queuing at the door. Named the Grand Assembly, in an apparent attempt to ingratiate itself with naysayers in the town, the pub has split opinion with residents since its was announced in was coming to the high street. MailOnline headed down for yesterday's grand opening to witness the pouring of the first pint while locals tucked into their morning fry ups.

Wetherspoon reveals plans for £3.5m pub in quaint town which locals claimed was 'too posh' for bargain boozer - and it includes some unusual features
www.dailymail.co.uk,
September 4, 2024
Wetherspoon will open a new £3.5million pub in a quaint Buckinghamshire town despite opposition from locals who believe the area is 'too posh' for the chain. Residents of picturesque Marlow fear 'The Grand Assembly' could attract unruly drinkers when it opens on September 24 on the site of a former M&Co clothing store. One complained its proposed signage is 'gross' and will 'disfigure' the area, while another said the external appearance 'looks more appropriate to Piccadilly Circus'. But Wetherspoon insisted the pub will boost the area and create 70 new jobs as it completes renovation works that began in April and hires staff on £12.22 per hour. The venue will also have a terraced courtyard beer garden at the rear, with the chain revealing it had worked with local charities to 'provide nesting sites for swifts - a recently red-listed species - and bats, while promoting pollinating insects and bees'. It comes after MailOnline spoke to local residents in February who feared the pub would 'spoil the demographic' of the town with some claiming it was not needed because Marlow already has Tom Kerridge 's Michelin-star pub The Coach nearby. But other locals welcomed the pub, with Beryl Simmonds saying: 'I think the problem is that those from the posh side of Marlow do not want us in their part of town.'
Tom Kerridge is slammed by Good Morning Britain viewers speaking about the struggles of high VAT in hospitality industry - as he charges £37 for fish and chips in his restaurants
www.dailymail.co.uk,
July 2, 2024
The famous Michelin star chef, from Salisbury, spoke to Ed Balls and Susanna Reid about the issues that restaurants, pubs and cafes are currently facing, adding that food energy prices are pushing the industry to 'ruin'. Ed asked him whether the VAT cut to 5 per cent during the Covid pandemic made a difference to those working in the food industry. Tom replied: 'That made a huge difference, that was the restaurant and hospitality industry's key to survival. As an industry, we are pushing for VAT to come in line with most of Europe where it sits between eight and 12 per cent for hospitality.' However, viewers of the morning talk show were quick to criticise Tom for trying to 'claw back' money by charging customers a whopping £37 for fish and chips at Harrods.

ALEX BYWATER AT KINGSHOLM: Celebrity chef Tom Kerridge was in the Kingsholm stands as Henry Slade and Exeter served up a feast of attacking rugby to keep their slim chances of a Premiership play-off place just about alive. Rob Baxter's Chiefs took maximum points from their Gloucester trip but they are still seventh and four points off the top four. They were far too good for a poor home side. And in England centre Slade, they had a classy performer operating at a higher level than almost any other player on the field. Slade sliced through the Cherry and White defence like a hot knife through butter. He was a constant attacking threat in midfield and kicked superbly from the tee.
