How Desert Island Discs DJ Lauren Laverne lent support to Rob Delaney, Thom Yorke and Jeremy Bowen as they opened up about their cancer tragedies - before star, 46, revealed she is in hospital with the disease

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 21, 2024
The mother-of-two, 46, has previously spoken to guests about cancer on her Radio 4 show Desert Island Discs. She was praised by listeners for her 'warmth and empathy' after her debut show in 2018 in which Olympic diver Tom Daley spoke of his final moments with his father Robert who died in 2011 following his battle with cancer. Rob Delaney appeared on the long-running show just weeks before Laverne's shock announcement, in which he opened up about his grief of losing his two-year-old son Henry to the disease. Laverne was softly spoken as she said how it was 'so difficult to comprehend' the 'agony of what you all went through'. Radiohead frontman Yorke also used the platform to open up about his own struggles and the 'hard time' his family went through when his ex-partner and mother of their two children, Rachel Owen, died of cancer aged 48 in 2016. BBC international editor and war reporter Jeremy Bowen told Laverne last June how his bowel cancer diagnosis in 2019 had 'brought back' his optimistic side.

So, is £17m for each gold REALLY worth it? The hard truth is that with so much funding Team GB fell short, writes JEFF POWELL… at least the England football team pays for its miserable failures

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 15, 2024
JEFF POWELL: The rather un- British orgy of self-congratulation has abated. The adoration by the luvvies, bless 'em, has subsided. Our civil servants have torn themselves away from the telly to resume working from home for at least an hour and a half a day. It is time to count the cost. Such as £17.55million for each beribboned gold, if you divide the £245.8m Government and lottery funding for Team GB at the Paris Olympics by the 14 medals struck in the only metal which matters in the table of national glory at the Games. Even if you finagle the figures to include the silvers and bronzes which make up the rest of the British haul of 65 medals, it comes in at £3.78m a pop. But in reality that disguises the dark depths of expensive failure in the City of Light.

'Princess Anne never made me feel inferior': Historian BRIAN HOEY, who worked with the all-action royal when writing her biography in the 1990s, pays tribute as she turns 74

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 15, 2024
'At least you always know where you are with her.' Those were first words I heard describing Princess Anne, from someone who had worked for her for years, writes BRIAN HOEY. It was one of the police bodyguards based at Gatcombe Park, her home in Gloucestershire. I was on my way to meet her about a biography of her I was going to write and, for the first time, she had agreed to cooperate with an author. Princess Anne was a delight to work with. She answered every and any question without any hesitation and when I had finished the final version of the script, she made a few factual corrections, but that was all. In the years leading up to the London Olympics, I was practically the 'Tom Daley Correspondent' for this newspaper. We had selected him as one of our 'Magnificent Seven', the stellar hopefuls we were following and backing all the way to their home Games, and reporting on that was my day job. None of the other aspirants had quite the stardust of Tom.

Paris 2024 has been 'the TikTok Games' with over 575 MILLION likes generated by Olympic-themed videos of medals, muffins and much more

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 10, 2024
The competition has been fierce in Paris, whether those battles have been fought on the track, in the velodrome or in the pool. You would expect no less at the Olympics, of course, where those life-changing gold medals are on the line. But away from the bright lights of the TV cameras capturing the action, this current crop of Olympians - more tech-savvy than any of those who have come before them - are locked in a different type of battle. This is the new age of the Olympics, after all. Gone are the days where the only action from the Games is beamed back to homes across the nation through terrestrial television. Athletes are now able to whip out their phone to capture searingly raw (and often hilarious) videos at a snap of their fingers, which they can share with their legions of fans across social media. And, as you would expect from athletes who spend their entire lives locked in competition, naturally there comes an element of who can record the most views on their videos.
