Last night, a tense MP, watchdogs, customers, and even post office owners all backed The Mail's call for a ban on old postage stamps to be postponed. Stamps that don't have a new barcode will not work after January 31 - a step that few people are aware of. According to reports, up to 100 million old stamps are tucked away in drawers and wallets. People are also unable to take them to a post office to exchange them for new ones as a result of legal tender when coins and notes are no longer legal tender. Rather, they must fill in a complicated form that can't be obtained from post offices and must be downloaded and send it off.
