In 2009, Morstead beat Glenn Pakulak for the Saints' punting job. In Super Bowl XLIV, he was instrumental in the Saints' win over the Indianapolis Colts. The Saints would eventually win the game 31–17. Morstead said after the game that he was excited about getting the job done correctly, but he was also concerned that if the play was not executed correctly, the Colts would have likely recovered the ball with a chance of extending their 10–6 lead. In a 62–7 victory over the Indianapolis Colts on October 23, 2011), he holds the record for most kickoff touches in one game (80 in 2011).
The Saints announced Morstead to a six-year contract, making him the second highest paid punter in the league (after Shane Lechler of the Oakland Raiders). He went on to have an amazing season in net punting yardage (with a record-breaking pace through 15 games) and was named to the Pro Bowl.
