Theo Riddick (born May 4, 1991) is an American football running back for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League (NFL).

He played college football at Notre Dame and was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the sixth round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Early years

Raised in Somerville, New Jersey, Riddick attended Immaculata High School in Somerville, New Jersey. He rushed for 4,042 yards and 52 touchdowns during his high school football career, which also included a state championship in 2006, leading his team to victory and a perfect 12–0 season. In June 2016, Immaculata's football field was named for Riddick.

Considered a four-star recruit by Rivals.com, he was rated as the tenth-best all purpose back in the nation. He accepted a scholarship offer from Notre Dame over offers from Rutgers, Penn State, and Pittsburgh.

College career

Riddick played college football for Notre Dame from 2009 to 2012.

Riddick, a freshman at Notre Dame in 2009, began his career as a reserve and mainly on special teams as a kick returner. In a victory over Nevada, he made his collegiate debut. On 37 attempts, he passed for 160 yards on 29 passes (5.5 avg), with 849 kickoff return yards on 37 plays. Weis was suspended before the season was over. He made the switch from running back to slot receiver under new head coach Brian Kelly in 2010. He has had 40 catches for 414 yards and three touchdowns in his first season as a receiver, as well as a game against Michigan State in which he had 10 catches for 128 yards and a touchdown. He did not have the breakout season many had hoped for in 2011, he had 38 catches for 436 yards and three touchdowns. Following an injury to starter Jonas Gray near the end of the season, he returned to running. He returned to running in his final season as a senior in 2012. Cierre Wood, a senior classmate, rushed for 917 yards on 190 attempts (4.8 avg) and five touchdowns, splitting them. He has also caught 36 receptions for 370 yards and two touchdowns. In a win over BYU over October 20, 2012, he had a career-high 143 rushing yards. In the victory at Southern California on November 24, 2012, he had a career day with 146 passing yards and a rushing touchdown to go along with 33 receiving yards. He was instrumental in the Irish's 2012 undefeated regular season. In the 42–14 loss, he had 37 passing yards and a six-yard touchdown.

Professional career

In the sixth round (199th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions selected Riddick. In 2013, Riddick was the 21st running back in the NCAA.

The Detroit Lions announced Riddick to a four-year, $2.25 million contract, with a signing bonus of $91,000. Riddick was chosen because of his position's flexibility. The Lions had intended to use Riddick at running back, slot receiver, third down, fielding kicks, and kick returns. In Week 16 against the New York Giants, he scored his first career touchdown on a two-yard run. He had 25 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown, four touchdowns, and 26 receiving yards in his rookie season.

In the 2014 season, Riddick saw a larger role in the receiving game. Riddick scored another touchdown against the Minnesota Vikings on a nine-yard pass from Matthew Stafford in Week 6, which was part of a 75-yard receiving game. He had 74 passing yards and a touchdown against the Atlanta Falcons two weeks later. He had 51 running yards, 34 touchdowns, 316 receiving yards, and four touchdowns in the 2014 season.

In the 2015 season, Riddick saw increased use, particularly in the passing game. He had two receptions for 37 yards and a receiving touchdown against the San Diego Chargers in the season's opener. He had 10 receptions for 51 yards and a touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals on October 11, 2011, against the Arizona Cardinals. He had seven passes for 63 yards against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 16, giving him 668 receiving yards on the season. This was a record for running backs for the Lions, topping the 662 receiving yards gained by James Jones in 1984. Riddick posted 80 receptions and 697 yards on the season, which tied for most running backs.

The Detroit Lions signed Riddick to a three-year, $11.55 million deal, which includes a signing bonus of $3.85 million.

Riddick had 45 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown, five receptions, 63 receiving yards, and one touchdown. After a season-ending injury to Ameer Abdullah in Week 2, he was the Lions' top running back in 2016. He had six receptions for 33 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns against the Philadelphia Eagles on October 9, with six intercepts for 33 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns. He appeared in ten games with eight starts in 2016, including 357 yards and one touchdown, while others went for 357 yards and five touchdowns. He had been suffering from a lingering wrist injury until the end of the season, causing him to be placed on injured reserve on December 31, 2016.

Riddick had six receptions for 27 yards and a touchdown in the 2017 season opener against the Arizona Cardinals. He had 29 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on December 10. In total, he had 286 rushing yards, three rushing touchdowns, 53 plays, 444 receiving yards, and two touchdowns.

Riddick had 171 rushing yards and 61 receptions for 384 receiving yards in a familiar role in the 2018 season.

Riddick was cut by the Lions after six seasons on July 27, 2019.

Riddick joined the Denver Broncos on August 4, 2019. With a shoulder injury, he was put on sick reserve on September 2, 2019.

On August 23, 2020, Riddick signed with the Las Vegas Raiders. He was shot on September 5, 2020, and he joined the training squad the next day. On October 3, he was recalled to the practice squad after the game and was not activated for the team's week 4 game against the Buffalo Bills. On November 5, he was admitted to the active roster. He was activated on December 2 and was put on the reserve/COVID-19 list by the team on November 21, and was activated on December 2 by the team.

Riddick re-signed with the Raiders on a one-year deal on March 19, 2021. On July 30, 2021, he announced his retirement from the NFL.
