Steven Adler Life

Steven Adler (born Michael Coletti; January 22, 1965) is an American musician.

He is best known as the former drummer and co-songwriter of the hard rock band Guns N' Roses, with whom he achieved worldwide success in the late 1980s.

Adler was fired from Guns N' Roses over his heroin addiction in 1990, following which he reformed his old band Road Crew and briefly joined BulletBoys, which both proved unsuccessful.

During the 2000s, Adler was the drummer of the band Adler's Appetite, and from 2012, he had held the same position in the band Adler.

In early 2017, he declared that he has no intention to continue with the band and that the band has now dissolved, with the reason being his lack of interest in performing during poorly attended concerts.

He appeared on the second and fifth seasons of the reality TV show Celebrity Rehab with Dr.

Drew, as well as on the first season of its spin-off Sober House.

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 as a member of Guns N' Roses.

Steven Adler Career

Life and career

Michael Coletti was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of an Italian-American father, Michael Coletti, and Deanna, a Jewish American mother. After his father left the family, his mother and her children migrated to Los Angeles, California. Adler was named after his father at birth, but his mother renamed him when she returned to her parents because Ashkenazi Jewish naming rules forbid children from being identified after living people. After his mother's marriage to Melvin Adler, who adopted her two oldest children, he adopted the surname Adler. Kenny's older brother and Jamie are both older brothers, as well as a younger brother. Adler lived in the San Fernando Valley until the age of 13, when he was forced to live with his grandparents in Hollywood due to his bad behavior. Adler befriended Saul Hudson, who later became Slash, at Bancroft Junior High; they met when Adler had a skateboarding accident and Slash stopped to assist him. Adler returned to his parents' house in the Valley for the remainder of high school, during which time he learned to play drums.

Adler auditioned for Sunset Strip staple London in 1983, after returning to Hollywood in 1983. When the audition was unsuccessful, he formed the band Road Crew, named after the Motörhead song "We Are" The Road Crew"—with his childhood friend Slash. They placed an advert in a newspaper looking for a bassist, and Duff McKagan replied with a note. They auditioned a number of singers, including one-time Black Flag singer Ron Reyes, and focused on demos that included the main riff of what would become the Guns N' Roses song "Rocket Queen." Slash disbanded the group the following year due to their inability to find a good lead vocalist, as well as Adler's laziness compared to himself and McKagan. Adler briefly performed with Hollywood Rose, which featured singer Axl Rose and guitarist Izzy Stradlin (who left shortly after).

In June 1985, Adler joined Guns N' Roses, which was recently founded by Axl Rose, Izzy Stradlin, and Los Angeles. Tracii Guns, Ole Beich, and Rob Gardner are among the Guns enthusiasts. After Gardner's departure, Adler and Slash's former Road Crew companion Duff McKagan (who joined in March 1985) completed the lineup. They performed nightclubs, including the Whisky a Go Go, The Roxy, and The Troubadour, among others, during 1985 and 1986, opening for larger shows. After being rejected by several major record labels, the band signed with Geffen Records in March 1986.

Guns N' Roses' debut album, Apode for Destruction, was released in 1987, selling over 28 million copies around the world, 18 million of which were in the United States, making it the best-selling debut album of all time in the United States. An inebriated Adler punched a streetlight during a barroom brawl in December, and Fred Coury of Cinderella was brought in as his replacement for several shows before he recovered. Guns N' Roses unveiled G N' R Lies in November 1988, which sold over five million copies in the United States alone, despite the fact that only eight tracks were included on previously released EP Live?

At a performance at the American Music Awards in January 1989, Adler was again absent; Don Henley substituted for him on drums. His absence was first due to a case of the flu, but it was later revealed that Adler had been in a drug rehabilitation program at the time. Axl Rose threatened to leave the group if certain members of the band didn't stop "dancing with Mr. Brownstone," a reference to the band's use of the drug "dote". Adler was one of those who promised to get clean, but he continued to have problems with his heroin use.

In early 1990, Adler was briefly suspended from the band due to his opioid use, but he was revived after agreeing to a deal in which he promised not to use opioids. However, by the time the band began to record the song "Civil War," his heroin use had grown so bad that he was unable to perform. He attempted to play "20, maybe 30 times" by Adler's own admission. Just for his bandmates to be able to participate in it, the song's drum track had to be heavily edited. Adler was officially fired from Guns N' Roses on July 11, 1990, as the studio continued, causing recording sessions to abort for several days at a time. On April 7, he appeared at Farm Aid IV for his last show with the band.

Izzy Stradlin, a veteran of the band, later admitted that replacing Adler with Matt Sorum of The Cult had a major influence on the band's sound. Guns N' Roses had morphed from a rock'n' roll band to a heavy metal band, according to Stradlin in reaction to an interviewer's suggestion that the line-up change had changed the band's name from a rock 'n' roll band to a heavy metal one. [Our songs] were written with Steve playing the drums and his sense of swing, as well as his sense of swing. It was just...unbelievable, strange, when it was gone. Nothing worked. I would have liked to continue with Steve, but we'd been two years behind and we couldn't wait any longer."

He was one of several drummers to audition for AC/DC after his release from Guns N' Roses. Following Axl Rose's dismissal of Adler and branding him a drug addict onstage at the MTV Video Music Awards in September 1990, Adler says AC/DC's boss made an offer. Instead, Adler reformed Road Crew, consisting of former Vain members, guitarist Jamie Scott, bassist Ashley Mitchell, and guitarist Shawn Rorie. They released an album and attracted the attention of a major brand, but the band disbanded shortly thereafter due to Adler's persistent drug use. Adler went on to a long, self-imposed exile from the music business; he later regretted, "I wish I could say that I did a lot of traveling or self-improvement, but all I really did was sit on the couch and get high, though the TV watched me." It was a very difficult time."

A year after his dismissal, in July 1991, Adler filed a lawsuit against his former Guns N' Roses coworkers, alleging that he was fired because the opiate-blocking drug he had been using to help him with his detox hindered with his concentration. He also stated that the reason he had been lured to sign took away his financial interest in the band, saying, "I was told that every time I did heroin, the band would fine me $2,000. ... The band were actually paying me $2,000 to quit, as these contracts reveal. All my writing credits were stolen from my royalties. They didn't like me any more and instead wanted me to be gone. The case was settled out of court in 1993; Adler received a back-payment check of $2,250,000 and was granted 15% of the royalties for all he did before his resignation.

Adler was arrested in Calabasas on a criminal charge of heroin possession on May 5, 1995.

Adler had a stroke and was hospitalized after taking a potent speedball, which resulted in partial paralysis of his face and culminating in a speech immunization. He pleaded no contest to disturbing the peace in connection with a domestic violence accusation involving a woman with whom he had been living for four days, three years' probation, and mandatory drug counseling throughout the year.

Adler and future Guns N' Roses guitarist DJ Ashba joined the newly formed hard rock band BulletBoys in June 1998. The band performed an album and revealed a US summer tour with Faster Pussycat, Bang Tango, and Enuff Z'nuff. However, Adler's return to music was cut short in September when he pleaded no contest to two charges of battery stemming from assaults on two other women in separate domestic violence incidents. He was sentenced to a 150-day prison term in jail and three years of probation, subject to a year of domestic violence education and a ban on using illegal drugs.

Adler formed Suki Jones in 2003, which later became Adler's Ape, with guitarist Jizzy Pearl, former Slash's Snakepit guitarist Brent Muscat, Faster Pussycat guitarist Brent Muscat, and former Ratt bassist Robbie Crane. The band toured Europe and Europe in 2003 and 2004, mainly songs from Guns N' Roses' debut album Destruction, as well as material from Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, and Queen, with a constantly evolving line-up due to members' previous commitments. Apdler's Appropriate Company in Hollywood, where they were joined on stage by Adler's former Guns N' Roses bandmates Slash and Izzy Stradlin for renditions of "Mr. Brownstone," "Paradise City," and "Knockin" on Heaven's Door in September 2003.

Adler's Apt., minus Brent Muscat, who had left the band, was released on January 2005 as a self-titled EP with four original songs and the covers "Hollywood" by Aerosmith and "Draw the Line" by Aerosmith. The launch was followed by a tour of the United States, Europe, Japan, and Argentina. The band had intended to release a full-length album through Shrapnel Records later this year, but it failed to appear. The group appeared at the Key Club in July 2007 as part of their tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of Appears for Destruction, where they were joined on stage by former Guns N' Roses members Izzy Stradlin and Duff McKagan. Despite that Slash was on hand, he did not join the band on stage, saying that he did not want to promote the possibility of a Guns N' Roses reunion.

In 2008, Adler appeared on the second season of the reality TV show Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew. Drew Pinsky, the show's resident medical specialist, regarded Adler as the "problem child" of the company; he referred to his conduct as "suicidal" and revealed that Adler had to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital for two weeks before beginning rehabilitation. Adler appeared on the first season of the Celebrity Rehab spin-off Sober House. An inebriated Adler became so offensive towards his coworkers that he was arrested at the Sober House headquarters during the show's filming in July. He was found guilty of being under the influence of a controlled drug and sentenced to community service. He was arrested in January of this year for failure to complete his community service within the timeframe set by the judge.

Adler's self-titled debut solo album, which was released in April, was coproduced by him with his former Guns N' Roses bandmate Slash. With Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, Alice Cooper, and Nicole Scherzinger, he appeared on "Baby Can't Drive." Classic Rock's expanded version of the album was included on the album. The following July, Adler's Apprehension, composer Rick Stitch, guitarist Michael Thomas and Alex Grossi, and bassist Chip Z'nuff appeared together on "Alive" as a result of Adler's autobiography "Ways N' Roses' debut of "Mega" or "Destruction: Sex, Drugs, and Guns N' Roses' release. The band also released two more singles, "Stardog" and "Fading" in December. Adler appeared in the fifth season of Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew in 2011, following another relapse.

Adler formed a new band named Adler after the breakup, as well as guitarist Lonny Paul, who had been a member of Adler's Appointement prior to the breakup, and drummer Jacob Bunton of Lynam and formerly of Mars Electric, who was later ranked out by former L.A. Johnny Martin, a gunman from the United States, on bass. "I love the music we're making!" Adler wrote. "I haven't been so excited about my band since the days of Guns N' Roses." Producer Jeff Pilson and Jay Ruston produced the band's debut album in Los Angeles. The album, titled Back from the Dead, features guest appearances from Slash and John 5, and was released on November 26, 2012, via New Ocean Media. The album's debut was preceded by the single "The One That You Hated" which was released on iTunes on April 10.

On April 14, 2012, Adler was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Guns N' Roses' classic collection. He was the inductees Slash, Duff McKagan, and Matt Sorum, as well as former Gilby Clarke and Slash's collaborator Myles Kennedy. Being inducted was "an honour and a dream come true," Adler said.

Adler appeared on the Kiss Kruise, which sailed from Florida to the Bahamas, in late October and early November 2012. These shows were the band's first live performances. Adler's planned tour to the United States was postponed the next year when Adler checked into a rehabilitation center to "continue working on his sobriety."

Adler joined Guns N' Roses for performances of "Out Ta Get Me" and "My Michelle," his first appearance with the band since his release in 1990. He made other guest appearances on television shows in Nashville, Los Angeles, and Buenos Aires. He was also expected to attend the band's surprise show at the Troubadour on April 1, but he had to cancel due to back surgery that caused him to pass out.

Alex Grossi, a guitarist from Adler's Appetite, has confirmed that the 30th anniversary of Appetite for Destruction will be commemorated.

On Kiss Kruise IX in 2019, Adler and his band performed.

Steven has been performing solo shows, covers of his favorite musicians with his band, as well as teaming up with other Rock and Metal artists for benefit shows throughout the years 2020-2022.

He also likes to keep his social media pages, such as Instagram and Facebook, up; at the same time, he does feature articles about his drums and the days of his daily life.
