He is the Olympic marathon champion, having gained gold at the 2012 London Summer Olympics.

He is the second individual after Gezahegne Abera to win a gold medal in the Olympic marathon as part of the same sport. He clinched the Olympic gold medal in 2012 under scorching, sunny, and humid weather.
