Stephanie Adams (July 24, 1970 – May 18, 2018) was an American model and author.
She was the Playboy Playmate for November 1992. Adams killed her seven-year-old son and herself on May 18, 2018.
Adams pushed her son out of a 25th-story window before bursting by jumping herself, according to the New York City Police Department.
Early life
Adams was born in Orange, New Jersey, and she was raised by her aunts Joyce and Pearl, who encouraged her to start modeling at the age of 16. She was of African American, Euro-American, and Cherokee descent, and she appeared to be a direct descendant of Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams.
Personal life
Adams married an Italian investment banker early in her career, but then divorced. Adams came out as a lesbian in a She magazine cover story in February 2003, the first Playmate to have done so. The Village Voice named her as the "Best lesbian sex symbol" in their 2004 "Best of" feature, claiming that it was "hard to turn a page in a queer newspaper without seeing the willowy model peeking out in a bikini or nothing at all." However, Adams confessed to marrying a man in 2009, but also described herself as straight in an interview. Adams, a Manhattan chiropractor, said she was retiring from public life and would spend the majority of her time with her husband and son after her marriage in 2010.
A New York City taxi driver called the police and mistakenly reported that Adams was armed with a rifle and had threatened to shoot him in May 2006. The taxi driver's license was reinstated and he was fined $2,700 for the offence. Adams allegedly threw her to the ground during the shooting, causing neck and back pains. In 2006, Adams filed a lawsuit against the New York City Police Department. A jury gave her $1.2 million, $400,000 more than had been requested by her solicitor in February 2012, but the judge later reduced it to $373,000. Adams said she had "no animosity against the NYPD."
Career
Adams enrolled in Ophelia DeVore School of Charm and began a career as a model, appearing in photo shoots for Seventeen magazine, Venus Swimwear, and Clairol commercial advertisements. When modelling for Wilhelmina Models, she appeared in Playboy magazine as "Miss November 1992." After becoming engaged to its CEO, John Casablancas, she joined Elite Model Management.
Adams earned a bachelor's degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1992. On the 40th anniversary of Playboy magazine, she made a cameo appearance on the "Top ten" list on the Late Show with David Letterman on November 20, 2003. In 2005, she appeared on the front page of The Village Voice.
Adams created Goddessy in 1999, according to her a portmanteau of "goddess" and "odyssey." She published her first book in 2003 and founded her own publishing firm in 2007. She devoted more of her time to writing following the death of her aunt from breast cancer in 2003. She published a book dedicated to her deceased aunt, He Only Takes the Best, the same year as she released another book named Survivor in honor of her elderly Aunt Pearl. About two dozen metaphysical books, astrology calendars, and a tarot card set were sold under the Goddessy brand. In 2004, she published Empress, a novel about women in ancient Rome.
