In the cruelest fashion, the Seattle Sounders' hopes of playing giants Real Madrid at the FIFA Club World Cup were shattered. With the second round match against Al Ahly, the MLS team seemed to be on for extra time, with just minutes remaining. Mohamed Afsha's 88th minute strike knocked a defender off the field and into the net, inflicting the Sounders' heartbreak.

Since winning the CONCACAF Champions League over Liga MX's Pumas UNAM last May, the Sounders are the first team from the United States to participate in the tournament. After beating Auckland City 3-0 on Wednesday, Al-Ahly qualified as African runners-up and advanced to the second round. Though the Sounders are contemplating a potential match with Madrid in the semis, they also know they will have to get past their African opponents first.
