INSIDE THE LIVERPOOL CAMP - LEWIS STEELE: There is a framed picture on the walls of Liverpool's training base in Kirkby which hangs purposefully in the areas frequented by academy stars. Taken just before the turn of the millennium, the photograph acts as the ultimate inspiration for the stars of tomorrow. Squinting down the camera in the snap were seven homegrown players: Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman, David Thompson, Dominic Matteo, Jamie Carragher and, then a fresh-faced teenager, Steven Gerrard. Earlier this year, Liverpool's media team sensed an opportunity to recreate a similar image with new protagonists. After the Reds won the Carabao Cup with a youthful team at Wembley, 11 of the latest academy success stories posed with the final trophy of the Jurgen Klopp era. Trent Alexander-Arnold in a knee-brace - he did not play that day - is the best known, but also present were Jarell Quansah, Conor Bradley, Jayden Danns, Stefan Bajcetic and Trey Nyoni to name just five. Who knows how iconic that image may one day be.

Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic has joined Red Bull Salzburg on loan for the remainder of the season.  The 19-year-old broke into the first team during the 2022-23 season and impressed as he went on to make 11 appearances.  However, long term adductor and calf injuries set back his progress and played just once last season. 

Stefan Bajcetic is reportedly set to leave Liverpool for a switch to Red Bull Salzburg after his talks with Barcelona fell through. The Catalans made an effort to hijack the deal, offering a one-year loan spell for £3.3m in order to cover the position of defensive midfielder after youngster Marc Bernal's season-ending ACL injury. Bernal was forced to leave the pitch against Valencia with the help of medical staff in the final minutes and was later confirmed to have suffered an ACL injury.

Barcelona are interested in signing a Liverpool midfielder on loan. The Spaniard had appeared set to join RB Salzburg on loan but could now head to Barcelona instead. Salzburg are managed by former Liverpool assistant boss Pep Lijnders, who rates the player highly.  Barcelona boss Hansi Flick is eager to add to his midfield options before the closure of the transfer window .

LEWIS STEELE: Red Bull Salzburg are trying to sign a second Liverpool midfielder of the summer as they have emerged as the frontrunners to complete a loan deal for Spanish youngster Stefan Bajcetic this week. The Austrian side have already signed teenager Bobby Clark from Anfield this summer in a £10million permanent deal and are now pushing to add Bajcetic to their ranks. They are managed by former Reds assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders. Jurgen Klopp's former right-hand man, alongside fellow ex-Liverpool coach Vitor Matos, believe they can give Bajcetic the minutes he requires to kickstart his career after missing most of last season through injury. He played just three times for the first team last term.

Liverpool's academy follows a stringent set of rules for its young players, as shown by academy director Alex Inglethorpe. These policies include a salary ceiling, a peculiar car policy, and the temporary confiscation of phones during training hours. Player salaries are limited to £50,000 a year as a result of these laws. In addition, a 'car clause' requires that players' vehicles must not exceed a 1.3 litre engine capacity.

Liverpool had 34 shots but could not break down United, with many players, including goalkeeper Andre Onana, putting in their best defensive game of the season. Ten Hag, the game's manager, was left feeling his team had the best chance of winning. The Dutchman said, 'I said after the game in the dressing room that I'm very proud of this team.' We should do this more often.' I said it. For example, Newcastle was also a tough game; we made one mistake, we shifted off and forfeited the goal. However, if you stay in the game and you are disciplined in your game-plan, finally it opens up, and you can take your chances or get two, three, four passes in after the ball returns or you are more dominant in the game.'
