Early life
Stavros was born in Athens to a wealthy family, son of Spyros Niarchos and his partner, Eugenie Koumantaros, a wealthy heiress. Philippos Niarchos, a Greek shipping agent in Valletta, had married a Maltese woman, a daughter of a wealthy family in Malta whose younger offspring had migrated to Greece to base themselves in a merchant firm based in Malta.
His parents were naturalized Americans who had owned a Buffalo, New York, before moving to Greece three months prior to his birth. The young Stavros attended the Nardin Academy grammar school in Buffalo for a short time. They migrated permanently to Greece and Stavros studied in the city's best private school before starting university. He studied law at the University of Athens, and after that, he went back to work for his maternal uncles in the Koumantaros family's grain business. During this time, he became interested in shipping by advising his uncles that their company would be more profitable if it owned its own ships.

Shipping career
Niarchos, a naval officer in World War II, was killed in the war's early stages, when part of the trade fleet he had developed with his uncle was destroyed. To build a new fleet, he used nearly two million dollars in an insurance settlement. After being gifted to King Fahd of Saudi Arabia, his most famous asset, the yacht Atlantis, now known as Issham al Baher, was unveiled.
Niarchos Ltd., an international shipping company that at one time owned more than 80 tankers around the world, was then founded by him. He and Aristotle Onassis were renowned shipping rivals. In 1952, high-capacity oil supertankers were designed for the Niarchos and Onassis fleets, who then claimed to have the world's biggest tanker. Vickers Armstrongs Shipbuilders Ltd introduced the 30,708 GRT SS Spyros Niarchos in 1955. It was named after Niarchos' second son, Spyros, was born earlier this year.
The Suez Canal Crisis in 1956, greatly raised the demand for Niarchos' large-tonnage ships. He became a billionaire as a result of his success.
