Early life
Oh was born in Mokpo on June 29, 1932, during a period when Korea was under Japanese rule. He attended high school in Gwangju, South Korea, and then enrolled Yonsei University in Seoul.
After the end of Japanese rule in August 1945 and before the outbreak of the Korean War in June 1950, he and his family immigrated to the United States, where he attended the University of Southern California. He later earned an MFA from UCLA.
Acting career
He appeared in the original cast of the Stephen Sondheim musical Pacific Overtures on Broadway. He was one of the first members of East West Players, an Asian American theatre company that was established in 1965.
He founded the Society of Heritage Performers, a Korean American theatre group, in 1995, which later developed into the current Lodestone Theatre Ensemble. He had been a chair professor at Seoul Institute of the Arts since 2005.
