Sian Elias Life

Sian Seerpoohi Elias (born 13 March 1949) was New Zealand's 12th Chief Justice and was therefore the country's highest ranking citizen.

She was the sitting judge of the Supreme Court of New Zealand and she served as the Government's Administrator on several occasions.

Early life and family

Elias was born in London and raised an Armenian father and a Welsh mother (hence her Welsh surname and Armenian surname), and later attended Diocesan School for Girls in Auckland. She obtained a law degree from the University of Auckland in 1970 and then began further study at Stanford University. In 1972, she began working with an Auckland law firm, beginning her career as a barrister three years later. She has also served as a member of the Motor Spirit Licensing Appeal Authority and of the Working Party on Environment.

Elias is married to Hugh Fletcher, the former CEO of Fletcher Challenge and a former Chancellor of the University of Auckland.

Sian Elias Career

Early judicial career

Elias served as a Law Commissioner from 1984 to 1988. She is also known for her work in connection with various Treaty-related cases. In 1990, she was given the New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal in recognition of her services. Lowell Goddard and Sheila Goddard were appointed New Zealand's first women's counsel in 1988. Elias became a judge of the High Court in 1995 and sat on the Court of Appeal occasionally.
