Serbegeth "Shebby" Singh (Punjabi: romanized: Sarab's sigha - 20 August 1960 – January 2022) was a Malaysian professional footballer who served as a defender. Since retiring, he served as both a mentor and a sports broadcaster in Asia. During the 2012-2013 season, he was Blackburn Rovers' Global Advisor.
Personal life and death
Singh died on January 20, 2022, at the age of 61. According to Bernama, he died as a result of exhaustion while cycling in Iskandar Puteri, Johor. Three of his coronary arteries had blockages, according to his post mortem. Zaquan Adha, a footballer, said he watched Singh before and remembered that the Singh looked 'tired' and pale' when he first started cycling, although he had just started cycling. Singh was cremated at Shamshan Bhoomi Hall in Kuala Lumpur.
Playing career
Singh started his football career with Johor FA before moving to Federal Territory in 1983, for which he was barred from playing for a year by Johor FA for reportedly going without permission. He was mainly affiliated with Kuala Lumpur FA and was a member of the Malaysia Cup three years in a row from 1987-1989. He also worked with Negeri Sembilan FA and Pahang FA before completing his career with Perpet FA in 1996.
He spent nine years of international football for Malaysia, including appearances in three Asian Games in 1982, 1986, and 1990, as well as a gold medalist in 1989.
He played for domestic football from 1978 to 1996. He has received every domestic trophy, including the Malaysia Cup, Malaysian FA Cup, and League Championship.
Coaching and media career
Singh coached a football team named 'MyTeam' in 2006 for a Malaysian reality television show. The team was mainly made up of amateur Malaysian footballers. The team toured Manchester United's training grounds during the series, where they met a random group of United Nations players. The game came to a goalless draw. In 2007, 'MyTeam2' was broadcast on television. They lost 2–0 to the Indonesian football team.
Singh was appointed technical advisor to Malaysian Super League team Melaka TMFC in 2007. After being fired as the club's caretaker head coach, Irfan Bakti Abu Salim, was fired, he served for a brief time as Caretaker head coach. He spent only one year with the club.
Singh appeared on South East Asian television as a football analyst.
