Athletic career
At an early age, White's talents attracted admirers. Tony Hawk, a professional skateboarder, befriended the nine-year-old White at the Encinitas, California, YMCA skate park, and mentored him, assisting White in turning pro in skateboarding at the age of 16. "Tomory was my hero, and I was too afraid to talk to him," White said, so every time I saw him at the skate park, I would try to impress him with my skateboarding in the hopes that one day he would say something to me." White has won many X Games, including the overall champion of Action Sports Tour Champion, and was the first person to compete in and win both the Summer and Winter X Games in two separate sports.
White converted skiing to snowboarding at age six, and by age seven, he had his first sponsorship. In his career, White has competed in five Winter Olympics. White took gold in the snowboard halfpipe event at the 2006, 2010, and 2018 Winter Olympics. White has also participated in the Winter X Games, where he has won a medal every year since 2002. He has an 18 (13 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze), the first quadruple win streak by a male athlete in one sport, the snowboard slopestyle. White's streak was snapped in 2007 when he lost to Andreas Wiig and Teddy Flandreau, with White taking the bronze. In 2003 and 2004, he was voted in the Air & Style Contest for the first time.
White took gold in the half-pipe at the 2006 Winter Olympics. After his first appearance in qualifying, White was almost out of action, scoring only 37.7. He made a score of 45.3 on his second run. White defeated in the finals with a score of 46.8 (50 is the highest possible score). Danny Kass, a fellow American, captured the silver medal with a score of 44.0.
White captured his third consecutive snowboard halfpipe title at the 2008 U.S. Open Snowboarding Championships in a near-flawless second run, winning his third consecutive snowboard halfpipe championship at the 2008 U.S. Open Snowboarding Championships for his third US Open slopestyle competition. This came after White's victory at the Burton US Open in 2007 where he came third in slopestlyle and first in the halfpipe. White was also named the first "Burton Global Open Champion" at the 2007 Open Championships. His reward for the tournament was $100,000 (Global Open Champ), $20,000 (1st Place Halfpipe), $90,000 (3rd Place Slopestyle), and a new Corvette.
In Europe, White introduced Shaun White Snowboarding in North America on November 16, 2008. In the United States, Shaun White Snowboarding was the 20th best-selling game of December 2008.
White's victory on the 2009 SuperPipe at Winter X Games XIII brought controversy. Kevin Pearce had five hits in the pipe, and they were all the same tricks White used in his final run. On the other hand, White had six hits and he started his run with a big backside rodeo 540, where Pearce started his run off with a huge grab. Despite Pearce's success, he had fewer hits, and his first attack was not as difficult as White's first one. Judges came to the conclusion that White deserved the highest rating because he had a more technological advantage and he had one more hits than Pearce. With the victory, White became the second competitor after Tanner Hall to win a gold medal in the SuperPipe for the second year in a row at the Winter X Games. He also won a gold medal in Slopestyle, finally winning gold after two years of bronze.
On February 14, 2009, White defeated the FIS World Cup Men's Halfpipe competition at Cypress Mountain in Vancouver, British Columbia. He started straight out of the gate in his first qualifying run and posted his best record of 45.5 on the day. White clinched the contest with the first of his two runs in the finals after a thumb was sprained on an over-rotated backside 1080. His first finals run was ranked with the highest score in FIS halfpipe, a 487.3.
White also won gold in the halfpipe at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. On his first run, White scored 46.8 on his first run, a good enough result to win the gold medal without a second run. He ran his second run as a victory lap, putting an end to his campaign with a much-anticipated Double McTwist 1260, which he dubbed The Tomahawk. This second run saw a record of 48.4 (50 is the highest possible score) enlarging his margin of victory. With a score total of 45.0 – 3.4 behind White, his nearest rival took the silver medal.
White "rediscovered" himself in the SuperPipe after a subpar execution in the Slopestyle and failing to make it to the finals. He landed in second place in his second run in a row after an 89. He finished the race by winning the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado, with his legendary Double McTwist 1260 and finishing with a score of 97.33. The score tied for the first time in X Games, which was set by White a year before. His 3rd run was a straightforward victory run on mainly straight air.
White earned a perfect 100 in the men's Snowboard SuperPipe at Winter X Games, becoming the first person in the Winter X Games to score a perfect 100.
White won his sixth straight SuperPipe victory, making him the second participant to win this event, with SnoCross racer Tucker Hibbert winning his sixth consecutive victory on the same day.
He claimed third place in the FIS Snowboard World Cup's Pipe & Slope contest in Copper Mountain, Colorado, in December 2013.
In the Halfpipe event, White placed fourth.
He was the most talked-about Olympic athlete on Facebook during the winter games.
White crashed into the edge of a superpipe while in New Zealand, preparing for the 2018 Winter Olympics; his face needed 62 stitches. Despite the crash, White was deemed eligible for the 2018 US Olympic Team. He won his third Olympic gold medal for the Men's Halfpipe event on February 14, with Ayumu Hirano of Japan winning the silver medal and Scott James of Australia winning the bronze. With a score of 94.25, White was ahead of Hirano by a full point going into his last run. Despite this, White won the gold medal with a back-to-back 1440s. His gold medal was also the 100th for the United States at the Winter Olympic Games.
In the halfpipe, White placed fourth at the 2022 Winter Olympics.
White said during the winter games that it would be the last Olympics in which he would participate. Later, he declared that it would be his last competition entirely.
Since being seven years old, White has had a sponsor. Since being with IMG for eight years, White has signed CAA Sports for representation. Burton Snowboards, Oakley, Inc., Birdhouse Skateboards, Park City Mountain Resort, Target Corporation, Red Bull, Ubisoft, Adio, Hewlett-Packard, and American Express are among the company's corporate endorsement contracts. He has also worked as a brand ambassador for Krave Jerky and worked with the company as part of their collaboration, creating and releasing his own flavors. In 2009, Forbes magazine estimated that he had earned $9 million from his endorsements.
