Mysterious selfies, 'affair' claims and a bizarre 'dig' in a Corrs pop song: How the Spanish royals can't shake off scandal (despite King Felipe's best efforts) with rumours about Queen Letizia's tryst with her former brother-in-law refusing to die down

Despite being beloved by the public, the royals have been rocked by explosive claims from the Queen's ex-brother-in-law this year, marring years of work from the King to rehabilitate the Spanish monarchy's image following his disgraced father's abdication. Jaime del Burgo (pictured top, centre, with his ex-wife and Letizia's sister Telma Ortiz) alleged he had an affair with the Queen that continued after she married King Felipe. The royal couple have put on a united front in the wake of the allegations and the royal household has refused to comment. However, it's not the only scandal to have rocked the monarchy in recent years, with the illicit affairs of King Juan Carlos eventually leading to a financial scandal which saw him abdicate in 2014 in disgrace. Even Letizia's side of the family is not free from controversy, after her sister Telma has two children with Gavin Bonnar (bottom centre) shortly after he split from his ex-wife, Sharon Corr. Fans of the Irish singer-songwriter believe lyrics she wrote about 'the queen's evil sister' may have been a dig at Telma, in a bizarre twist that saw controversy surrounding the royals spill out into pop culture.

Queen Letizia of Spain stuns in vibrant red trouser suit as joins King Felipe in Oviedo to mark Spain's National Armed Forces Day

Queen Letizia of Spain (pictured) was stylish in a vibrant red trouser suit as she joined her husband King Felipe (pictured) in Oviedo today. The royal, 51, wore the chic, single-colour ensemble as the couple honoured troops during Spain 's National Armed Forces Day. Letizia paired the eye-catching ensemble with a simple but stylish pair of flat white trainers. Mother-of-two Letizia let her bold trouser suit, which she paired with a top of the same colour, take centre stage and carried no handbag. Her jewellery was also kept to a minimum: she wore a pair of statement drop gold and red earrings, and a chunky gold ring was visible on her index finger. Spain's National Armed Forces Day, which dates back to 1978, is an annual event held to raise awareness around, and recognise the work of, the Armed Forces.
