Shabba Ranks (born Rexton Rawlston Fernando Gordon; 17 January 1966) is a Jamaican dancehall musician.
Early life and family
Shabba Ranks was born in Sturgetown, St. Ann, Jamaica, and raised in Seaview Gardens, Kingston. He and his wife, Michelle, have two sons Rexton Jr and Jahwon. He currently resides in the New York City area.
His father, Ivan Gordon, was a mason who died in 1990. His mother, Constance "Mama Christie" Christie, remained in Seaview after Shabba's success, feeding the community with money sent from her son after his emigration. She was the subject of the 2015 hit song Shabba Madda Pot from dancehall artist Dexta Daps.
Career
Like some of his dancehall contemporaries in Jamaica, he gained his fame by toasting (or rapping) rather than singing. He was a protégé of deejay Welsh. Co-Pilot was his first appearance on stage. His international career began in the late 1980s, alongside a number of Jamaicans, including reggae singers Cocoa Tea and Crystal. Ranks have worked with Chuck Berry and American rappers KRS-One and Chubb Rock, respectively.
In 1989, he signed a recording contract with Epic Records.
The genre reggaeton's stylistic roots can be traced back to 1990's "Dem Bow," from Ranks' album Just Reality. The Dem Bow riddim, developed by Bobby "Digital" Dixon, became so popular in Puerto Rican freestyle sessions that it was referred to as "Dembow" at the beginning of the Puerto Rican reggaeton. The Dem Bow riddim is an integral and inseparable piece of reggaeton, so much so that it has become its distinguishing feature.
"Mr. Loverman" was his most hit single outside of Jamaica. "Housecall" with Maxi Priest, "Slow and Sexy" with Johnny Gill, "Respect," "Trailer Load A Girls," "Wicked inna Bed," "Caan Dun," and "Ting A Ling" are among the other main tracks. In 1992 for As Raw as Ever and 1993 for X-tra Naked, he received the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album.
Ranks achieved another hit on the Addams Family Values soundtrack in 1993, in which he contributed a rap/reggae version of the Sly and the Family Stone to "Family Affair." In 1995, A Mi Shabba's third album for Epic, A Mi Shabba, was released. He was dropped by the brand in 1996. In 1999, Epic began to record Shabba Ranks and Friends, a greatest hits collection.
Ranks made a partial comeback in 2007 when he appeared on Busta Rhymes' song "Clear The Air," which also featured Akon. In April 2011, Shabba released "None A Dem" a single on Big Ship Pepper Riddim's Pepper Riddim. Shabba appeared on Tech N9ne's EP E.B.A.H. in 2012. "Boy Toy" is the track on the radio. Shabba appeared in A$AP Ferg's album "Shabba" in 2013 and appears in A$AP Ferg's song "Shabba" and appears in a cameo near the end of the music video. On the 23rd of November 2013, he appeared in Migos and Busta Rhymes as a collective. He was reportedly working on a new album in August 2013.
