Early life and education
Brin was born in Moscow, 1973, to Russian Jewish parents, Mikhail and Eugenia Brin, both graduates of Moscow State University (MSU). His father is a retired mathematics professor at the University of Maryland, and his mother is a scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.
The Brin family lived in a three-bedroom apartment in central Moscow, which they also shared with Sergey's paternal grandmother. Mikhail Brin, a student at the Warsaw, Poland, in 1977, decided that the family had to immigrate. They first applied for their exit visa in September 1978, and as a result, his father was "promptly fired." His mother had to abandon her career for similar reasons. For the next eight months, they were forced to take on temporary jobs as they waited, afraid that their request would be denied as it was for many refuseniks. They were granted official exit visas and were allowed to leave the country in May 1979.
With support from Anatole Katok, the Brin family lived in Vienna and Paris, while Mikhail Brin obtained a teaching position at the University of Maryland. The Brin family received assistance from the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society during this period. They arrived in the United States on October 25, 1979.
Brin attended elementary school at Paint Branch Montessori School in Adelphi, Maryland, but he received further education at home; his father, a professor in the University of Maryland's mathematics department, encouraged him to study mathematics, and his family assisted him in maintaining his Russian-language skills. He attended Eleanor Roosevelt High School, Maryland. Brin began his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Maryland in September 1990, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in computer science and mathematics at the University of Maryland. He worked at Wolfram Research, the mathematica's programmers.
Brin began his graduate work in computer science at Stanford University as a result of a National Science Foundation graduate fellowship, earning a M.S. degree. In 1995, the first computer science research was published. He was on leave from Stanford's PhD research as of 2008.
