If McCarthy is looking for consolation, he could compare his 269-day tenure to Theodore Pomeroy, who was Speaker for a day on March 3, 1869. Unlike McCarthy, however, Pomeroy decided to serve for a short time, despite McCarthy's resignation on March 4 having already announced his plans to resign from office. He was therefore allowed to take over from Rep. Schuyler Colfax (R-Ind.) without protest. In order to become Ulysses S. Grant's vice president, the individual was expected to step down.
