Vince Gilmer (pictured left), 61, was conditionally pardoned in January 2022, while his medical mystery captured widespread attention after being documented in a popular radio program and a book. But because of the strict terms attached to the pardon and what his advocates describe as delay or indifference from government officials and health care institutions, he's remained behind bars in a southwest Virginia prison as his health deteriorated. Gilmer has Huntington's disease, a rare, devastating and incurable disorder that attacks the brain and affects patients' cognition and physical abilities.

In 1999, Hae Min Lee, 18, was strangled to death and buried in a shallow grave at Leakin Park in Baltimore. Syed, her ex-boyfriend from high school, was found guilty. However, a judge ordered the release of Syed from his life term in September after he had been serving 23 years, but they could no longer justify keeping him locked up based on new information. Despite being a 'year-long' probe, Lee's family claims that they were only warned that the state was planning to vain Syed's prison two days before they proceeded to do so on September 14. And Lee's brother (inset, pictured with his mother) was only informed of the in person hearing, in which Syed sensationally was released from jail one business day before it was scheduled. Despite the 'late' notice, the family was not given any information about the recent evidence or two new suspects in the lawsuit that ultimately led to the release of Lee's convicted murderer out of prison.

The family of Hae Min Lee have started a trial to challenge the judge's decision to dismiss his conviction just one week after Adnan Syed was released from jail. This comes after they claim that they were given 'rational' time to prepare for the hearing that gave Syed his liberty. In the famous podcast 'Serial,' Syed's innocence, which he has maintained since his detention in 2000, was highlighted.' Prosecutors have 30 days from the time his arrest was suspended to determine whether they will retry him or dismiss any charges.

Hae Min Lee's family, who was murdered in Baltimore in 1999, aged 18, has accused Baltimore City's state attorney of not giving them enough time to plan for Monday's hearing. Adnan Syed, Lee's convicted killer, had his conviction reversed at the hearing. Syed was released, but prosecutors now have 30 days to determine whether or not they want to retry him. The Baltimore City Attorney's Office has told Hae Min Lee's family that Adnan Syed had murdered their beloved daughter and sister,' the letter read.' "The family was told one week ago that the state had discovered new information and would file a motion to dismiss Mr Syed's arrest, for the first time.' They said they were 'denied the fact that would have enabled them to have a meaningful voice in the proceedings.'

Adnan Syed walked along the steps of Baltimore's City Circuit Court (inset) and savoured his first glimpse of liberty in 23 years, surrounded by cheering supporters on their phones. On Monday afternoon, as he arrived in a white shirt and blue tie, but looking washed out after decades in the tough U.S. prison system, he smiled and waved to his followers before being led away to await the next step in his sensational 'fight for justice.' Syed was 41 years old (left) when he was convicted in 2000 of strangling his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee (pictured with Syed left), whose body had been found in the previous year but partially buried in woodland. Sarah Koenig (right), an ex-crime reporter for the Baltimore Sun, had been struck by the inconsistent evidence and underwhelming results of Syed's defense prosecutor at his appeal. Barbara Mosby, Baltimore's state attorney, was encouraged by Koenig's work as a reporter and podcaster to launch a year-long probe into Syed's murder.

Adnan Syed has been released after more than two decades in prison. According to ABC News, Hae Min Lee, the protagonist of Sarah Koenig's "Serial" podcast, was convicted in the 1999 murder of Baltimore Woodlawn High School student Hae Min Lee. Attorney Marilyn Mosby and the Sentencing Review Unit (SRU) Chief Becky Feldman of Baltimore City had filed a motion on September 14 pledging that the indictment be dismissed and for Syed to likely receive a fresh trial.
"My lawyers have sworn not to only advocate for the victims of crime, but also in the search of justice, where the evidence exists," Mosby said in a 14 September statement. "For that reason, Syed deserves a fresh trial where he is properly represented and the most recent evidence can be presented." We are obliged to maintain confidence in the validity of accusations and do our part to rectify when this standard is not established. We've met with Ms. Hae Min Lee's family and we're 100% clear that the individual responsible for this horrific crime must be held accountable."
