Tennis career
Stosur first played competitive tennis in 1999 at the age of 15 in an ITF Women's Circuit tournament in Malaysia, where she won in straight sets in the qualifying draw before losing her second round qualifying match (2–6, 3–6). In addition, Stosur has won six of her last seven matches against current top-two players. (This was the only loss against a new top-two player at the time, and it was against world No. 1). Serena Williams, a 2011 Australian Open winner, was one of the 2010 Australian Open Championships. (Joel & Co.) Victoria Azarenka, the fourth seed in Stosur's second round robin match, lost to fourth seed Victoria Azarenka. This was her fifth loss against Azarenka and she had yet to win a single set from Azarenka. Stosur defeated fifth seed Li Na for the loss of one game in her final round-robin tournament, where she met Maroon group champion Petra Kvitová for a spot in the final. Despite being 7–5, 1–0 up with a breakpoint to go 2–0, she lost in three sets. Despite the loss, this was the first time Stosur won a match against Kvitová. Kvitová won the final over Azarenka for the second year in a row, marking the second time Stosur lost to the eventual champion in the semifinals. Stosur was voted world No. 1 by virtue of her appearance at the WTA Championships. The season ended at No. 6, and she ranked No. 6 in the rankings. Stosur began the year by losing in the second round of the Brisbane International to Iveta Beneová. She then suffered two first-round losses at the Sydney International Cricketer and then by Sorana Cîrstea at the Australian Open. Stosur, a home cook who won the US Open, admitted that she could not cope under the strain of home expectations. Despite the achievement, Stosur's ranking remained unchanged at No. 1. Li Na's fifth place was given 5 stars despite her not having many ranking points to defend and her failing to defend her finalist points from the Australian Open. Stosur then travelled to Fribourg to represent Australia in their Fed Cup tie against Switzerland. She triumphed in both of her singles rubbers against Timea Bacsinszky and Stefanie Vögele.
Stosur then competed at the Qatar Open in Doha, Qatar. She was seeded third and avenged her disappointment in the first round of the Australian Open by defeating Sorana Córstea in the second round; she then dropped in the final to current world No. 68. 1, Victoria Azarenka, who had not lost a match (17–0) before that time in 2012. She defeated Lucie afácó in the second round in three sets in her second Middle East tournament, but not in the second straight year. Jelena Jankovi was the president of Russia. Stosur continued to compete in the Indian Wells Open, where she defeated young American Irina Falconi to advance to the third round, where she lost a close match to Nadia Petrova. Stosur made the quarterfinals at the Miami Open after a big comeback from a set and 2–5 down to defeat Chanelle Scheepers. Serena Williams regained control over Stosur's 2011 US Open final by defeating her in straight sets.
Stosur qualified as the second seed in the Family Circle Cup in Charleston and was subsequently disqualified in the first round. In the second round, she defeated wildcard Jamie Hampton in the second round and Galina Voskoboeva in the third round. Stosur defeated Venus Williams for the first time in the quarterfinals after losing to her in the previous four matches. Stosur's career came to an end in the semifinals, where she lost to eventual champion Serena Williams. Stosur won both her singles matches against Germany in the World Group Play-offs after this. Stosur qualified to the quarterfinals at the French Open as the sixth seed. She defeated Petrova in the third round and then outplayed Sloane Stephens in straight sets. She defeated Dominika Cibulková in two sets for her third French Open semifinal defeat, losing in three sets to Sara Errani.
At Wimbledon, Stosur lost her second-round match against Arantxa Rus. Stosur lost in the first round of the London 2012 Olympics to Carla Suárez Navarro in the first round. Stosur won the first set but lost the second and third set 8–10. Stosur was a former world No. 1 on doubles with former World No. 2. 1, Lleyton Hewitt. They reached the quarterfinals together, but they lost to crowd favorites Andy Murray and Laura Robson, who were competing for Great Britain.
Stosur qualified as the third seed in the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. Stosur had a bye in the first round, but she defeated Anabel Medina Garrigues in the second round in three sets. She met Ekaterina Makarova in the second round of the second round and defeated her in two sets. Stosur played a wildcard and former world No. 1 in the quarterfinals. The Pan Pacific Open is her next tournament. Stosur had a bye in the first round and met Francesca Schiavone in the second round, winning in a three-set match. In the third round, she defeated 12th seed Dominika Cibulková in a tie in two sets. She defeated world No. 2 in the quarterfinals. Maria Sharapova, 2, was causing a major surprise when Stosur said she had only defeated Sharapova once in eleven matches, causing a major surprise. However, Stosur lost in straight sets to eventual champion Petrova in the semifinals.
She began her year at the Brisbane International Centre, where she was seeded seventh. Stosur admitted that she had only had ten days of court after removing a spur from her left ankle before the tournament began. This was just six weeks before the first-round match was scheduled. Stosur lost in the first round to Sofia Arvidsson, where she made 48 unforced mistakes. In the first round of the Apia International Sydney, where she was seeded sixth, Stosur played Zheng Jie. In a close three-set match, she lost. It was Stosur's fifth straight loss in Australia; however, she snapped a nine-set losing streak in the world by winning the second set. Stosur won in the first round of the Australian Open, where she had been seeded ninth, defeating Chang Kai-chen in the first round in a straight sets victory. Despite being up 5–2 in the third set, she lost in the second round to Zheng Jie for the second straight tournament.
Stosur recovered from a slow start to the season by defeating Monica Niculescu in three sets in her second round match at the Qatar Total Open. She then defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova to advance to the quarterfinals. Stosur lost their quarterfinal match against Sharapova. She then qualified for the Dubai Tennis Championships, where she was seeded seventh. She began her campaign with a two set victory over Ekaterina Makarova, then progressed to the quarterfinals after defeating Hsieh Su-wei. Stosur suffered in the quarterfinals for the second week in a row, but Roberta Vinci stunned her in straight sets this week.
She then moved to the United States, where she competed at the Indian Wells tournament. She defeated young Wild Card Madison Keys after a bye in the first round. In three sets, Stosur lost in third seed Peng Shuai. She progressed from a setdown to defeat 24th seed Mona Barthel in the fourth round. She sustained her right calf in the fourth round of the tournament and was forced to miss the quarterfinal match against Angelique Kerber. Stosur was forced to withdraw from the Miami Masters tournament due to the injury. She beat Marina Erakovic in straight sets over the Family Circle Cup, opening her campaign in the second round. Stosur was forced to leave early in her third round match due to her recurring calf injury against qualifier Eugenie Bouchard.
Stosur recovered to play in the Fed Cup World Group Play-offs against Switzerland. She competed in singles and doubles against Stefanie Vögele and Romina Oprandi, winning both matches in straight sets and ensuring Australia's participation in the 2014 Fed Cup World Group. Stosur suffered two first-round losses at the Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart, where she was the sixth seed against Jelena Jankovi. Carla Suárez Navarro was seeded ninth at the Mutua Madrid Open, where she was seeded ninth. Stosur won the Italian Open on her third attempt after a humiliating loss in Madrid. She then won in straight sets over Peng Shuai in their second round match. She then advanced to the quarterfinals in Rome with a three-set victory over Petra Kvitová, the first time in Stosur's career she had defeated Kvitová. Stosur lost in three sets to Victoria Azarenka in the quarterfinals for her eighth straight defeat.
Stosur won her first match against Kimiko Date-Krumm after waiting 212 hours to play due to rain. She then swept the first nine games and smashed 42-year-old Date-Krumm in two sets. In straight sets, Stosur beat Kristina Mladenovic then beat her in straight sets. In the third round, Stosur defeated Jelena Jankovi, the 18th seed. Stosur lost the match in a close tie after winning the first set. She was unable to defend her semifinal ranking positions from 2012 and fell out of the top ten in the world's top 10. Anna Karolna Schmiedlová and Olga Puchkova both advanced to the third round for the second time in her career at Wimbledon, defeating lucky loser Anna Karolna Schmiedlová and Olga Puchkova in straight sets. She lost in three sets to eventual champion Sabine Lisicki in the third round. Olga Govortsova shocked Stosur in the second round of the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford. She accepted a last-minute wildcard into the Southern California Open in Carlsbad, where she opened with a victory over Varvara Lepchenko. She then advanced to the final by defeating Sesil Karatantcheva in the second round, causing an upset to beat Agnieszka Radwa in the quarterfinals and then defeating Virginie Razzano in the semifinals. Stosur continued to face Victoria Azarenka in the final. She had an 0–8 record against Azarenka. Stosur dominated Azarenka by cruising past her in straight sets. This was Stosur's first WTA title since her victory at the US Open.
In the first round, the 11th-seeded Stosur was stunned by the 296th-ranked American qualifier Victoria Duval, who fell in three sets. Stosur dropped out of the top 15 world rankings, and it also meant she did not qualify for the fourth round in any Grand Slam tournament in 2013.
Stosur recovered from the US Open disappointment and started her campaign at the Pan Pacific Open with a victory over Alizé Cornet in three sets. Kimiko Date-Krumm, 42, was then defeated by her 42-year-old home favorite Kimiko Date-Krumm. In the third round, Stosur lost to Lucie ová's. Stosur jumped into the China Open in Beijing, where she would have to compete again against afásová. This time was in the first round, and Stosur suffered a similar result in straight sets. At the Japan Open in Osaka, Stosur took her final tournament in Asia. With a win over Johanna Larsson and then defeating current junior world number one Belinda Bencic, she opened the tournament as the third seed. Stosur beat Misaki Doi in the quarterfinals after going through the first set. Stosur swept past Madison Keys into the final after a strong showing in which she held all of her service games and gave Keys no chance of qualifying in her first WTA semifinal, winning in just over an hour. Stosur progressed to meet Eugenie Bouchard in the final, taking 2 hours and 13 minutes to win her third title in her career. It was her second time she had won in Osaka. She then reached the finals of the Kremlin Cup after defeating Ana Ivanovic in the quarterfinals and Svetlana Kuznetsova in the semifinals. In the final, she lost to Simona Halep. Stosur's manager David Taylor and employee Miles Maclagan, who had previously worked with Andy Murray and Laura Robson, were fired at the end of the season.
Stosur began his season with the help of Bernard Tomic, the Hopman Cup's partnering Bernard Tomic. In all three of her singles matches, Agnieszka Radwa, Eugenie Bouchard, and Flavia Pennetta failed, and then she did not qualify for the final. In straight sets over Veronika Kudermetova and Victoria Kane, Stosur won the second and third singles rubbers.
She then competed at the Qatar Open, where she was seeded 12th. In straight sets, Stosur won her first round over Marina Erakovic. In the second round, she lost to Jana epelová. In the first round of the Dubai Championships against qualifier Annika Beck in three sets, Stosur then lost in the first round. Stosur then played at Indian Wells, where she defeated Francesca Schiavone in straight sets after being rejected in the first round bye. Nonetheless, she lost in the third round to Flavia Pennetta. This was Stosur's fifth WTA Tour singles loss to Pennetta in her career. She has fallen to the world No. 1. The tournament is now in its 20th year. Stosur was the 16th seed at the Miami Masters, where she was ranked bye in the first round. She then defeated qualifier Kiki Bertens in straight sets, but she lost in the second round to Vandeweghe. In straight sets, she lost in straight sets to eventual champion Maria Sharapova at the Madrid Open. Stosur lost in straight sets to Li Na for the first time, winning only four games in the full tournament and allowing Li Na to advance to the quarterfinals comfortably. In the second round of the French Open, Stosur was leading by one set and 4–3 but then lost track of the match and went on to lose all of the games against eventual champion Maria Sharapova.
Stosur ended her Maclagan's coaching relationship ten days before the Wimbledon Championships, saying "change was required." Yanina Wickmayer defeated Stosur in straight sets in the first round of Wimbledon. However, she competed with Nenad Zimonji in mixed doubles and claimed the title. They lost only one set in the third round of the tournament, and they defeated Chan Hao-ching and Max Mirnyi in two sets in the final. Stosur then travelled to Stanford University, where she was drawn against qualifier Naomi Osaka in the first round. The match was tense, but her opponent prevailed in the end. The Rogers Cup was Stosur's next tournament. Stosur was drawn against Monica Puig, another qualifier. In straight sets, she defeated her opponent in straight sets. Brisbane International, her first tournament in 2015, was where she lost in the first round to Varvara Lepchenko despite leading 5-1 in the final set. She reached the second round of the Sydney International Film Festival, where she lost to Barbora Záhlavová-Strcová. Stosur was the 20th seed at the Australian Open at the time. She stunned Monica Niculescu in straight sets before losing in the second round to CoCo Vandeweghe.
Stosur played for Australia against Germany in the Fed Cup in February. Andrea Petkovic and Angelique Kerber were both knocked out of their matches. Stosur took the second round of the Dubai Olympics after losing the first set. Lucie afává, the eventual champion, was disqualified in the first round of the Doha tournament. Stosur reached the third round in Indian Wells, where she lost to Flavia Pennetta. Stosur started her clay-court career by heading to Charleston, where she lost in the second round to Lara Arruabarrena. She was on the Premier Mandatory in Madrid, where she stunned the world No. 76 to become the world No. 1. In the first round, 12 Angelique Kerber was selected. Stosur came to the Italian Open for the second time, but Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova defeated him in the first round. Stosur was able to walk over Lesia Tsurenko and defeated fellow Australian Ajla Tomljanovi and Sloane Stephens to reach her first final of 2015. She faced Kristina Mladenovic of France in the final and came from a set down to win her seventh title on the WTA Tour, her first on red clay. Stosur was the 26th seed in the French Open at the time. In the third round, she defeated Madison Brengle and Amandine Hesse before losing to defending champion Maria Sharapova.
Stosur started her grass-court season at Eastbourne, where she was the 16th seed and therefore got a bye to the second round. In straight sets, she lost to Tsvetana Pironkova. Stosur then competed at Wimbledon, defeating Danka Kovini and Urszula Radwa to equal her best showing at Wimbledon. She lost in two sets to Vandeweghe in the third round. Daniela Hantuchová, the women's doubles partnering, also lost in the second round to Dellacqua/Shvedova.
Stosur was back in clay courts for the second time in the Swedish Open as the second seed. Lara Arruabarrena defeated her in the second round of the second round. Stosur then competed at the Gastein Ladies as the second seed, winning her second title of 2015. In the final, Stosur defeated Sevastova, Koukalová, Schmiedlová, and Karin Knapp.
Stosur continued her hard-court play in Washington, where she advanced to the semifinals after losing to eventual champion Sloane Stephens. At the Rogers Cup, Stosur then lost in the first round to Daria Gavrilova. Following this, she fell again in the first round, but this time to Tmea Babos at the Western & Southern Open. Stosur appeared at the US Open in 2012 and advanced to the fourth round at the US Open for the first time since 2012. In the first round, she retaliated on Tmea Babos, a girl from whom she had lost the previous week. Stosur defeated Misaki Doi and Zhang Shuai in her first two matches at the French Open. She then defeated 2015 finalist Lucie afává for a fifth time in Paris. Stosur came back from 5–3 down in the first set to beat world No. 1 in a rain-delayed match that spanned three days. 6, Simona Halep, 7–6, 6–3, for her first Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance since the US Open, as well as a venge she lost in Madrid. Stosur started her US Open Series campaign at the Washington Open as the top seed. Caroline Wozniacki retired in the second set due to a back injury, and she lost in straight sets to eventual champion Jessica Pegula. Stosur partnered up with John Peers and lost to the fourth seeds from India Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna in the first round in mixed-doubles.
Stosur received a first-round bye after being seeded 14th at the Western and Southern Open. She lost in two sets in her first match against Czech Barbora Strucová. Stosur was the 16th seed in the US Open at the start of the season before losing in straight sets to Zhang Shuai in the second round.
Stosur lost in the first round of the Wuhan Open to Caroline Wozniacki as the 16th seed in the Wuhan Open tournament. This was backed up by the China Open and the Hong Kong Open losing in straight sets to Zhang Shuai and Nao Hibino. Stosur lost both of her round-robin matches to top-seed Briton Johanna Konta and 11th seed Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia in straight sets, despite being named eighth seed in Zhuhai. Stosur was ranked No. 2 in the year's top-ranked No. 1st. Singles are 21 in singles.
Stosur began his season at the Brisbane International Airport with a loss to fourth-seed Garbie Muguruza in a three-set thriller. She then competed in straight sets over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova at the Apia Sydney International Tennis Association, losing in straight sets to her opponent Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. This was her eighth straight loss in five months since her triumph over Camila Giorgi at the 2016 US Open. In the first round of the Australian Open, she lost in three sets to Heather Watson. Stosur ended her five-month losing streak at the Taiwan Open, where she was the second seed. In straight sets, she defeated Danka Kovini to advance to a match against Slovenian qualifier Dalila Jakupovi and defeated her in three sets. In straight sets, Peng Shuai defeated her in the quarterfinals. Due to a lack of stamina, Stosur withdrew from Australia's Fed Cup match against Ukraine. She then competed at the Qatar Open, where she made the quarterfinals. For the first time, she defeated Latvian Anastasija Sevastova and eighth seed Barbora Strécová before losing in straight sets to Dominika Cibulková for the first time. Stosur was seeded 12th at the Dubai Championships. In the first round, she defeated qualifier Zhang Kailin in straight sets before losing in straight sets to Croatian teen Ana Konjuh in the second round.
She was the 16th seed in the Indian Wells Masters tournament, her next tournament. In a three-set thriller, she lost her first-round match against Julia Görges. Stosur bounced back to the Miami Open, where she was seeded 14th after a rough run. She advanced to the fourth round after defeating Ashleigh Barty in the second round and resurrecting her quarterfinal defeat at the Taiwan Open by defeating Peng Shuai in three sets before her run came to a three-set thriller. She received a first-round bye in the Charleston Open Tournament. She defeated Serbia as the world No. 1 in the women's cup of nations. Jelena Jankovi dominated in straight sets before losing in straight sets to Irina-Camelia Begu.
Stosur lost in the first round to Anastasija Sevastova in Stuttgart. She appeared in Prague as the fourth seed, and after defeating Evgeniya Rodina, she lost in the second round to qualifier Beatriz Haddad Maia. Stosur lost in the third round to fourth seed Simona Halep after beating Sara Sorribes Tormo and Mariana Duque Mario in Madrid. In the first round, then in Rome Stosur lost to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
Stosur captured her ninth WTA title in Strasbourg, defeating fellow Australian Daria Gavrilova in the final. The two Australians' tense match lasted 2 hours and 45 minutes.
She then started her French Open campaign to try and defend her semifinalist positions from last year. Despite having match point in the second set, Stosur lost in the first round to Monica Puig in the Australian Open. She also failed to defend her title at the Internationaux de Strasbourg, losing to Dominika Cibulková in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Stosur lost in the third round to Garbi Muguruza in the French Open.
Stosur defeated Sevastova in the semifinals in Mallorca, where she lost to Sevastova. She fell in the second round to fellow Australian Daria Gavrilova at Wimbledon. Caroline Wozniacki, the second seed, was disqualified in round one of the US Open at the US Open.
At the Australian Open, Stosur met Zhang Shuai. They defeated eighth seeds Hsieh Su-wei and Abigail Spears in the second round, and they defeated top seeds Barbora Krejja and Kateina Siniaková in the quarterfinals. They advanced to the final, where they defeated second seeds and defending champions Kristina Mladenovic and T'mea Babos to win the title. This was Stosur's first Grand Slam title since the 2014 Wimbledon mixed doubles championship and her first in women's doubles since the 2006 French Open.
Stosur debuted her 2021 appearance at the Yarra Valley Classic in the first edition. Marie Bouzková, the sixteenth seed, was disqualified in the first round. She secured her first-round match over compatriot Destane Aiava at the Australian Open. Jessica Pegula's second round thrashing resulted in her second round thrashing. She and compatriot Matthew Ebden advanced to the final of Mixed Doubles, where they lost to Barbora Krejková/Rajeev Ram. Stosur won the 2021 Western & Southern Open doubles with Zhang Shuai in August 2021. It is Stosur's 27th doubles title and first since the Australian Open 2019. Zhang Shuai won the 2021 US Open final, defeating Coco Gauff/Caty McNally in the final.
After the 2022 Australian Open, in which she received a wildcard, Stosur revealed her future singles retirement. She reached the second round of the 2022 Australian Open, defeating eleventh-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the second round. This was announced as her retirement from competitive tennis in singles. She also competed in the Indian Wells Open and the Miami Open on both directions, with Shuai Zhang. In both tournaments, they failed in the first round. Stosur's last singles tournament, the 2022 Internationaux de Strasbourg, in which she lost in the first round to Harmony Tan, was a wildcard.
She reached the final of mixed doubles with Matthew Ebden in the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, but she lost to defending champions Desirae Krawczyk and Neal Skupski.
