LAWRENCE BOOTH IN MULTAN: With 12 minutes to go before lunch on the third day of the first Test, Joe Root punched Aamer Jamal down the ground - and knew the record was his. As ball hit boundary, Root was crowned England's greatest Test run-scorer of all time, passing Alastair Cook's tally of 12,472, and leaving only Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis and Rahul Dravid ahead. Even in Multan's cauldron, he was breathing rarefied air. Root's celebrations were muted, partly because that's his way, partly because the heat had all but sapped him of the strength to raise his bat.

DAVID LLOYD AT LORD'S: Record breaker Joe Root dazzled on Saturday as he hit 103 runs against Sri Lanka to claim his 34th Test century and surpass Sir Alastair Cook as England's all-time leading centurion.  He also joined an exclusive group of players - which includes George Headley, Graham Gooch and Michael Vaughan - to have scored two centuries at Lord's.  Root's ton helped England claim a 430-run lead in their second Test against Sri Lanka, with play being called off on Day Three due to bad light. 

Joe Root is now the eighth most prolific batsman in the history of Test cricket after moving ahead of Shivnarine Chanderpaul on Sunday. Root passed Chanderpaul's career total of 11,869 runs moments after registering his 94th Test half-century for England. The 33-year-old Yorkshireman later went on to make the 32nd Test century of his career, before eventually being dismissed for 122. 

England wrapped up a comprehensive victory over West Indies by an innings and 114 runs at Lord's on Friday as legendary seam bowler Jimmy Anderson bid farewell to Test cricket. Needing four wickets to get the job done ahead of day three, Anderson picked up his 704th and final Test wicket to get the ball rolling as Joshua Da Silva nicked behind to Jamie Smith. From then on, it was the Gus Atkinson show as he dismissed Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph and Jayden Seales to finish with 12 wickets in the match.

Sporting legends packed out the Royal Box at Wimbledon today in the hopes of seeing Andy Murray 's take to the All England Club grass for the final time. But the stars from Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola to England cricketer Ben Stokes were left disappointed after Murray's mixed doubles partner Emma Raducanu pulled out of their match at the last minute this afternoon. It means three-time grand-slam champion Murray's distinguished Wimbledon career has now come to an end before he retires from the sport later this year. LAWRENCE BOOTH IN KOLKATA: Following Mail Sport's revelation that India had gone behind the ICC's backs to ensure their World Cup semi-final against New Zealand in Mumbai took place on a used pitch, the world of cricket reacted with shock. The pre-tournament deal with ICC pitch consultant Andy Atkinson was that the game will be played on a new surface, but India would insist on a pitch that had already been used twice. They defeated New Zealand by 71 runs, with Virat Kohli scoring a world-record 50th one-day international century in front of a raucy crowd, as well as Sachin Tendulkar and David Beckham, and Mohammed Shami's seven wickets.

Virat Kohli declared himself the most prolific white-ball batsman of all time, while Mohammed Shami emerged as the tournament's most dangerous bowler. Virat Kohli set a new record in his 50th ODI century to defeat fellow India's Sachin Tendulkar as New Zealand faced him in their World Cup semi-finals. Kohli tied the record early this month and is now out in front, as Tendulkar watched his former colleague compile a 117 off 113 runs to underpin India's 397 for four. Kohli jumped up and punched the air before collapsing to his knees and soaking up the cacophonious applause from Tendulkar and former footballer David Beckham after rising to three figures.
