The 38-year-old died on Sunday, but the reason for his death was not revealed until a Yahoo Sports study on Sunday evening. Hemophagocytosis (HLH) is a life-threatening immune disease that most commonly affects infants and young children. According to Swedish studies published in 2015 by the National Library of Medicine, the prognosis has a 40 percent mortality risk. Johnson's HLH and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma were not known publicly, but he did pull out of a 2021 Bellator match due to a health condition. The issue raged over the past year, and Ali Abdelaziz, his manager, pleaded with supporters as recently as last month.
