Inside the battle of eco-Hogsmeade: Villagers are furious at Harry Potter star Rupert Grint's plans to build a new green town beside his £5.4m estate. Now it is all set to come to a head, finds KATHRYN KNIGHT

Along with their neighbours in the pretty Hertfordshire village of Kimpton, Clifford Harland and his wife Claire could rely on one sure sign that dusk was settling over their neighbourhood. 'The sky would pretty much go black for a moment as the rooks all came flocking back to the forest,' Clifford, a 73-year-old retired agricultural retailer, recalls. Their destination was the thick woodland adjacent to the Harlands' home in a row of 19th-century cottages which forms part of the 22.6 acre estate of Kimpton Grange. Alas, of late, fewer of the birds can be spotted in the skies over the village as night falls. 'The woodland hasn't really been looked after and a lot of the trees have fallen or died so there are fewer places for the birds to rest,' is how Davina Malcolm, Clifford's neighbour a few doors away, puts it. What's more, if one local landlord has his way, there will be even less historic woodland close by - and less too of the accompanying birdlife, bats and stag beetles to which it plays home. In its place will be smart new 'eco' housing in the form of a terrace of two-bedroom homes, alongside five more 'luxury' detached homes further back. That, on paper at least, is the dream of Rupert Grint - the current 'Lord' of Kimpton Grange's manor house, outbuildings and land after purchasing the property 15 years ago at the tender age of 19 for £5.4million courtesy of the fortune he had amassed by playing Harry Potter's loyal sidekick Ron Weasley in the global franchise.

A play due to debut at the Edinburgh Fringe this summer that explicitly criticised Harry Potter author JK Rowling's views on gender is struggling to cast women. Rowling, who wrote the Harry Potter series of children's books, has been harshly criticised for being an outspoken critic of transgender people. She has been denounced as a 'TERF', short for Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist, for her views on trans people and their place in society.
JK Rowling says women's rights face 'the greatest assault in my lifetime' by trans activists and regrets not speaking out 'far sooner'

The 58-year-old Harry Potter author has previously been criticised for her staunch views on gender identity, but has always strongly denied accusations of transphobia. She explained her belief in protecting women's sex-based rights in an essay which features in The Women Who Wouldn't Wheesht - a forthcoming book on Scotland's battle for women's rights. And she said that had she not spoken out against activism she would have felt 'ashamed for the rest of my days'.
EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: Going under? Harry Potter star Rupert Grint's plans for £5.4million home development are deluged with criticism by Flood Authority
www.dailymail.co.uk,
May 22, 2024
EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: Amassing £20million by the time you're 21 may sound like a passport to a life untainted by strain and strife. But Harry Potter star Rupert Grint may beg to differ - even though, at 35, his fortune has reportedly swollen to well over £40million. Afflicted by kidney stones two years ago - eventually neutralised by laser blasts and the insertion of a stent in a very tender place - he's also developed what he describes as a 'huge fear' of bees, which is quite a problem, given that bee-keeping is one of his hobbies. And now, I can disclose, his plans for Kimpton Grange, the 18th century Hertfordshire pile he snapped up for £5.4million back in 2009 but which he's never lived in, have been deluged with derision - by the local Flood Authority. In a scathing appraisal, it says that Grint's proposals are 'likely to increase flood risk', adds that three 'infiltration' tests were not completed, and points out that he failed to provide 'sufficient information' about 'watercourses that could be utilised for the discharge of surface water'.

Daniel Radcliffe (left) has reignited a row with JK Rowling (right) over trans views by saying his beliefs don't have to align with the author's just because she made him a star. The actor, 34, and fellow Harry Potter stars Emma Watson, 34, and Rupert Grint, 35, have been outspoken in their support of gender ideology - that biologically male trans women are actually women. Yet although Radcliffe admitted 'nothing in my life' would likely have happened if not for beloved author Rowling, 58, he said that didn't mean he didn't owes her 'the things he truly believes'. Despite the multi-millionaire's view that trans women are women, just this week it was revealed the NHS will declare sex is biological. It came after the Cass report found there is 'remarkably weak evidence' for gender-affirming techniques in children such as puberty blockers. It also said that 'for the majority of young people, a medical pathway may not be the best way' to help when they are 'presenting with gender incongruence or distress'.
JAN MOIR: Why JK Rowling SHOULDN'T forgive the weaselly band-wagon jumpers she made famous

She won't accept any apology they - Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint - might be willing to make, now that the Cass Review has been published - which vindicates her views on what she calls 'the catastrophe of child transition'. The weaselly bandwagon jumpers didn't hesitate to kick Rowling to the kerb when she aired her beliefs - widely held by the British public - that sex is real and has lived consequences, not least that women's lives are fundamentally shaped by being female.
