"I don't think any government should encroach on what goes on in the bedroom at all," Wainwright says in 2008.
Wainwright argued in favour of legalizing same-sex marriage in the United States in April 2010, primarily because he wanted to marry Weisbrodt. "I wasn't a big gay rights advocate before meeting Jörn because I adored the whole old school promiscuous Oscar Wilde frenz show of what being gay" once was." "All changed" after meeting Jörn.
In a 2020 interview with NME, Wainwright has openly condemned 45th US President Donald Trump, addressing him in his music video for his album "Sword of Damocles" and saying, "It's impossible to minimize the Trump administration's ineptitude and pure evil."
Life and career
Wainwright was born in Vancouver, to folk singers Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III. He was divorced when he was three years old, and the bulk of his childhood was spent in Montreal. His father, Peter Stuyvesant, the 17th century Dutch governor of New Amsterdam, later New York, is a descendant of Peter Stuyvesant, the 17th century Dutch governor of New Amsterdam, who died in New Amsterdam. Wainwright holds dual citizenship in the United States and Canada. He attended high school at the Millbrook School in New York (which would later inspire his song "Millbrook") and then studied piano at McGill in Montreal. He began playing piano at the age of six and began touring with "The McGarrigle Sisters and Family," a folk band starring Rufus, his sister Martha, his mother Kate, and aunt Anna. His song "I'm a-Runnin" (which he appeared in the film Tommy Tricker and the Stamp Traveller at the age of 14, earned him a nomination for Best Original Song in 1989, Genie Awards. He was nominated for the Most Promising Male Vocalist of the Year in 1990 by the National Vocalist of the Year.
When a youth, Wainwright was identified as gay. He told Rolling Stone that his father was aware of his homosexuality early on. "We'd drive around in the car; he'd play 'Heart of Glass,' and I'd kind of mouth the words, presuming to be Blondie." Just a sign of many more things to come." In another interview, Wainwright said that his "mother and father could not even comprehend me being gay." We've never really thought about it."
Wainwright became interested in opera during his teenage years, and the style strongly influences his music. (For example, the song "Barcelona" by Giuseppe Verdi's opera "Macbeth" has lyrics from the libretto. He became interested in Édith Piaf, Al Jolson, and Judy Garland during this period. He studied classical music at Interlochen Arts Camp as a youth.
Wainwright was sexually assaulted in Hyde Park, London, after picking up a man at a bar at age 14. "I said I wanted to go to the park and see where this huge concert was going on," he explained years later. I had hoped it was going to be a romantic walk in the park, but he assaulted me and robbed me afterwards and threatened to strangle me." Wainwright claims that he survived only by pretending to be an epileptic and faking a seizure. He was known to have been celibate for five or seven years after the shooting, and then became promiscuous.
Wainwright was on the Montreal club circuit and then cut a series of demo tapes by Pierre Marchand, who later produced Wainwright's album Poses, and later released Wainwright's album Poses. The resulting tapes enthralled his father Loudon, who gave them to his friend Van Dyke Parks. Lenny Waronker, the DreamWorks Records executive who later signed Wainwright to his label, was sent by Parks.
In 1996, the singer toured New York City, where he appeared at Club Fez on a daily basis. Rufus Wainwright, 1998, he moved to Los Angeles this year and began his first studio album, 1998's Rufus Wainwright. Waronker partnered Wainwright with producer Jon Brion, and the pair spent the majority of 1996 to 1997 on the record. On 62 rolls of tape, Wainwright performed 56 songs in total, on 62 tracks. The sessions cost $700,000.
Wainwright's self-titled debut received critical acclaim; Rolling Stone named it as one of the year's best albums, as well as the best New Artist" of the year. Wainwright was nominated for four awards by the Gay & Lesbian American Music Awards, including Album of the Year, Pop Recording of the Year, and Video of the Year, as well as Best New Artist. Wainwright's second album, Poses, was released on June 5, 2001, to critical acclaim, but limited numbers were sold. The album debuted at No.117 on the Billboard 200 and No.1 charts, and at No. 1 on the Top Heatseekers chart. He appeared on Tori Amos, Sting, Ben Folds, and Guster from 2001 to 2004, as well as assisting with the album's promotion from 2001 to 2002.
Wainwright became addicted to crystal methamphetamine in the early 2000s and temporarily lost his sight. During what he described as "the most surreal week of my life," his addiction hit its peak in 2002. During the week, he appeared on BBC comedy television show Absolutely Fabulous, and spent many nights with his mother and Marianne Faithfull, and experienced regular hallucinations of his father throughout his life. Since finding out he was either going to detox or I was going to live with my father, he decided after that. "I knew I wanted an asshole to yell at me, but I felt he was right," said the bill.

Live from the London Palladium. Rufus Does Judy at Carnegie Hall, a CD compilation of his performances at the New York venue, is a collection of his performances. Lorna Luft of Garland expressed enthusiastic support for Wainwright's recordings of her mother's songs in 2008. The album was nominated for a 2009 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. In early 2008, Wainwright invented the idea of Blackoutsabbath. Participants are encouraged to live "off the grid" as much as possible on a set date by unplugging electronics, walking or cycling for transportation, shutting down lights, and lowering electricity consumption in any other manner appropriate.
Participants explore how they can contribute to the Earth's wellbeing throughout the year as the sun rises on the evening of Blackoutsabbath. To raise money for the cause, annual benefit concerts take place. Joan Wasser, Jenni Muldaur, and friend and fellow singer-songwriter Teddy Thompson were among the special guests on the festival. The organization's official website has news about the campaign, as well as links to many tools, green products, and organizations that promote energy conservation and environmental protection.
Rufus performed at the Knitting Factory in downtown Manhattan with his sister Martha Wainwright and mother, Kate McGarrigle, as well as several more of his relatives. The cast members, as Emmylou Harris, Lou Reed, and Laurie Anderson, performed original and traditional Christmas songs. The performance was released on DVD by Revelation Films in November 2009.
Wainwright's first opera, Prima Donna, was written in 2007–2008, about "a day in the life of an opera performer." Wainwright, who was on the verge of writing her first opera, Prima Donna, was eagerly planning for her comeback, when he fell in love with a journalist. There are four characters in the libretto, and it is in French. Metropolitan Opera general manager Peter Gelb had originally ordered the opera. However, Wainwright and the Met's inability to schedule an opening in the 2009 season ended their collaboration as a result of a controversy over Wainwright's decision to write the libretto in French and the Met's inability to schedule an opening. Prima Donna was staged during the Manchester International Festival, where the first performance at the Palace Theatre on July 10, 2009, was held instead of a New York opening. Wainwright "may have a difficult time persuading critics that he is deserving of a spot among the top ranked performers," one newspaper said. In June 2011, Prima Donna received the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Musical/Opera.
Wainwright revealed in November 2009 that he had completed recording his sixth studio album, and that he was calling it All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu. With the first single "Who Are You New York?" released in Canada, April 5 in the United Kingdom, and April 20 in the United States, the album was released in Canada, on March 23. "I am not sure what the hell I am talking about."
Wainwright and mother Kate McGarrigle attended the Royal Albert Hall in London in December 2009 to raise funds for the Kate McGarrigle Fund, a rare condition that affects connective tissue such as bone, muscle, nerves, and cartilage. It was his mother's last act before her death in January 2010.
Wainwright proposed to Jörn Weisbrodt, his partner, in late 2010. In early 2012, the couple moved to Toronto, Ontario, after Weisbrodt was named artistic director of Toronto's annual Luminato festival.
Wainwright's first child was born in 2011 with childhood friend Lorca Cohen, daughter of Leonard Cohen. On his website, Viva Katherine Wainwright Cohen, the proud parents of Los Angeles, California, was born on February 2, 2011 to Deputy Parents Jorn Weisbrodt and proud parent Lorca Cohen. The little angel is obviously healthy, presumably happy, and obviously very beautiful."

Wainwright recorded his seventh studio album with producer Mark Ronson. He referred to the new songs as more "danceable" than his previous work. Out of the Game, a game album, was released in late April and Canada in the UK and Canada, and in the United States in early May.

Hadrian attended Opera Fusion: New Works, a joint project of Cincinnati Opera and University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, before its premiere.
Wainwright created a new version of his first opera in 2015, which was followed by Francesco Vezzoli's film starring Cindy Sherman as the Prima Donna. The finale was shot in Paris during spring 2015 and produced by Petite Maison Productions, before it premiered in Athens in September.
Rufus signed a new album and music publisher BMG Rights Management just over a year after launching stand-alone single "Sword of Damocles" in October 2018. "Trouble in Paradise," the album's first single, was released shortly after. The album, Unfollow the Rules, was announced in February 2020 alongside the unveiling of Joni Mitchell's "Damsel in Distress" and was set for a release in April. In March, a new single, "Peaceful Afternoon," was released on digital platforms, as a B-side in France. Following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Wainwright's album "Unfollow the rules" are trapped in the warehouses, "you know that I am an old school guy and the physical product is extremely important." I am incredibly proud of this album and the way I want you to experience it ideally, including listening to it from front to back in the warmth of your living room, listening to the lyrics, and even looking at the booklet that I carefully crafted." This news was followed by the unveiling of "Alone Time," the LP's fourth single, which was originally scheduled to be out on April 24, 2020. In early June, the first single, a tongue-in-cheek analysis of fame and place relative to geographical location, "You Ain't Big." Unfollow the Rules, Rufus Wainwright's 10th studio album, was released on July 10. The album was welcomed with a warm reception upon its unveiling and has amassed mostly favorable critical feedback, with a score of 82 on Metacritic, his highest score on the site equal to his 2001 LP Poses.
