Rougned Roberto Odor (Spanish pronunciation: [ruuneoo]) is a Venezuelan professional baseball second baseman for Major League Baseball's Baltimore Orioles (MLB). He has played for the Texas Rangers and New York Yankees in MLB. From 2011 to 2014, he played for Texas's little league affiliates before being called up to the MLB team. Odor was traded by the Rangers to the Yankees in 2021, and he was released on November 23, 2021. The Baltimore Orioles later signed him.

Early life and family

Odor was born in Maracaibo, Venezuela, on February 3, 1994. Douglas' grandfather's name and grandmother's name, Nedia, were mixed in Douglas, and in keeping with the family's tradition of giving boys names beginning with the letter "R," the "D" in Douglas was changed to a "R" in honor of yielding Rougned.

Rougned's father, who was also named Rougned, played college baseball for the University of New Orleans. Rougned José Odor, his sister and younger brother who joined the Texas Rangers team on February 19, 2015. Rouglas' uncle, who appeared in Minor League Baseball for the Cleveland and Milwaukee Brewers teams, is now a manager with the Akron RubberDucks. Three of his uncles on his mother's side played baseball. All three players competed for the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League, while Eduardo Zambrano played for the Chicago Cubs.

Despite being born in Maracaibo, he visited his mother's family in the country on weekends. He spent time on horses, and he loves toros coleados, a sport involving horses.

Odor began playing baseball at the age of two. He competed in the 2009 World Youth Baseball Championships. He was named as a second baseman for the tournament's all-star team.

Personal life

A pair of quarter horses were purchased as part of the Odor contract that was signed in 2017 by Rangers owner Ray Davis. Odor intends to establish a ranch in the North Texas area so that his family will move from Venezuela. These are the seventh and eighth horses Odor has owned.

Professional career

Odor was named as an international free agent by the Texas Rangers in 2011, earning a $425,000 signing bonus. He was quickly assigned to the Spokane Indians of the Class A-Short Season Northwest League by the Rangers. He was the youngest player in the Northwest League and had a.262 batting average on the season. Odor was suspended for four games after starting a brawl during a match against the Vancouver Canadians. Odor of the Class A South Atlantic League batted.259 with the Hickory Crawdads of the Class A South Atlantic League in 2012.

Odor was batting average in 99 games played for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans of the Class A-Advanced Carolina League, where he had a.303 batting average in 2013. Odor was promoted to the Frisco RoughRiders of the Class AA Texas League in August 2013. Odor's trade with the Rangers allowed them to trade utility infielder Leury Garcia to the Chicago White Sox for all-star right fielder Alex Rios last month. In 130 games for Myrtle Beach and Frisco, he had a.305 batting average, six triples, 11 home runs, and 78 runs batted. Odor has been named by the Rangers as their year's top minor league player of the year.

In 2014, the Rangers welcomed Odor to spring training. Frisco started the year off with a year of records.

On May 8, 2014, the Rangers promoted Odor to the major leagues. Odor, a Boston Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz, scored a single for his first major league hit on May 9. Odor was pitching against Houston Astros pitcher Brad Peacock on May 12, his first major league home run against him. In a 12–4 victory over the Seattle Mariners, he scored his first grand slam on August 27. Odor was the youngest player in the MLB during his rookie season and helped the Rangers' second base struggle, despite finishing 67–95, the third-worst record in baseball this year.

In 386 at-bats over 110 games, Odor finished the year with a.259 batting average, 14 doubles, nine stolen bases, and 48 RBIs. He was the youngest player in the American League in triples (73) and was tenth in caught stealing (7).

Odor was the Rangers' starting second baseman in 2015, but he failed spectacularly, hitting.144 with one home run, nine RBIs, and 25 strikeouts to go with seven walks in 29 games. On May 11, he was invited to the Round Rock Express of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League. Odor's demotion slash to a.352/.639 slash, with five home runs, 19 RBIs, and only 10 strikeouts to 12 walks in roughly the same number of appearances. Following Delino DeShields Jr.'s injury, Odor was recalled to the Rangers and went 2-for-3 against the Dodgers on June 15, making him return to the Rangers. Rougned hit.391 with two home runs and nine RBIs, while hitting.319 with five home runs and 16 RBI in July, and remaining.319 with five home runs and 16 RBI in July.

He finished the regular season with 16 home runs, 61 RBIs, and 54 runs scored. With 17. he led all AL second basemen in errors.

After Bautista slid into Odor at second base during a double play, Odor launched an on-field brawl by punching Jose Bautista in the face in the eighth inning of a game against the Toronto Blue Jays on May 15, 2016. Odor struck Bautista squarely in the chest first and then swung at him. This incident unfolded over from the bad blood that resulted from the Rangers' American League Division Series in 2015, with Blue Jays fans throwing garbage onto the field and Bautista flipping his bat vehemently after seeing the Blue Jays' go-ahead home run. Odor was banned from baseball for eight games after being involved in the brawl. Odor's suspension was reconsidered after an appeal, and he eventually finished at seven games.

Odor finished the year with a.271 batting average, 33 home runs, 33 doubles, and 88 RBI in 150 games. He walked in 3.8 percent of his at-bats, the lowest percentage in the major leagues, and had the lowest walks-per-strikeout ratio in the majors (0.14). He had the highest percentage of curveballs of all MLB hitters (16.0%). With 22, he led all AL second basemen in errors.

Odor was charged with a throwing mistake on October 9, which allowed the Toronto Blue Jays to score the winning run in Game 3 of the ALDS' tenth inning, effectively ending the Rangers despite setting the best record in the AL in 2016.

Odor played for the Venezuelan national baseball team in the 2017 World Baseball Classic before the 2017 season. Odor signed a six-year contract worth $49.5 million on March 25, 2019. On March 30, the agreement was finalized. Odor scored two home runs in his first two at-bats of the season in the Rangers' season opener against the Cleveland Indians.

He batted.204/.397, had the lowest on base percentage of all qualified major league batters, and had the lowest batting average on balls in play (.224) of all major league players in 2017. He led all AL second basemen in errors for the third season in a row.

Odor batted.253/.424 with 18 home runs and 63 RBI in 2018. He stole 12 bases but led the American League in stealing with 12. He batted.205/.439/.721 in 2019, with 30 home runs and 93 RBIs. With 178 strikeouts, he led the American League. With 15, he led all American second basemen in errors in 2019. Odor batted.167/209/4.113 in 2020, with 10 home runs and 30 RBI. Odor played in 38 games on the year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Odor was told on March 29, 2021, he had not been called to the Rangers' Opening Day roster. He was slated for assignment when the Rangers reloaded their Opening Day roster on April 1.

The Rangers traded Odor to the New York Yankees for Josh Stowers and Antonio Cabello on April 6, 2021. He played in third base for 23 games for Gio Urshela in July and August.

On November 19, the Yankees announced Odor for assignment. Odor was released by the Yankees on November 23.

Odor in Baltimore agreed to a one-year deal on November 30, 2021. In 2022, he struggled with the team, resulting in a negative WAR.
